Project Zomboid Extended 3D Item Placement

Hang guns, line up stuffed animals, and stop fighting the tile grid in Build 42.20.

3D Item Placement

Build 42.20’s The Big Glow Up did not only double the map. Official notes shipped a vanilla 3D item placement system: inventory items can sit at any position within a tile, and you can hang guns or crafted melee weapons on a wall. Players who still subscribe to old “house decoration” mods for B41 are solving a problem the default client already has. This page is the how-to for Extended 3D Placement, wall mounts, what still needs a Workshop tool, and why a pretty shelf can desync in multiplayer if you fight the tile.

This is not Carpentry furniture pick-up. Moveable objects (fridges, sofas) still use the pickup/place furniture flow with a tool—see Move Furniture. 3D placement is for world items—the bat on the floor, the pot on the counter, the rifle you want above the door.

How to place an item in 3D

  1. Drop or Place the item from inventory onto the tile you care about (floor, table, shelf).
  2. Right-click the world item, not the inventory icon.
  3. Open Extended 3D Placement (wording may read Adjust position / Extended Placement depending on patch).
  4. Nudge offset and rotation until the model sits where you want it—including against a wall for hangable weapons.
  5. Confirm. Walk away and look from another angle; isometric cameras lie.

Do not start the gizmo while climbing stairs. Unstable builds used to lock items to invalid squares or throw Lua errors; 42.8+ patched several of those, but stairs remain a bad place to decorate.

Grab and Extended Placement menus show item icons so you can tell which bottle you are about to yeet. World items highlight when selected. Options include a color of highlighted world items if the default glow fights your wallpaper.

Wall weapons and “the armoury look”

Official copy is explicit: hang guns and crafted melee on a wall of your choosing. Practical rules that keep you from losing a katana into the void:

  • Place the weapon on the floor or a table next to the wall first, then enter Extended Placement and slide it onto the wall plane.
  • Favour interior walls you already barricaded from the outside. A street-facing display is loot advertising.
  • Hanging is visual plus world state. The item is still on a tile. If you put it “on the neighbour’s wall” optically, you will pick it up from the wrong square. Keep offsets honest.
  • Co-op: tell teammates which tile owns the shotgun. “It’s on the wall” is not a grid coordinate.

Stuffed animals on the bed, plates on the table, and tool layouts on a workbench are the same system. The glow-up pitch was decoration before death. Use it. Just do not block the sheet-rope window with a decorative crate—see Sheet Ropes.

What vanilla does not do

  • Height on a bookshelf beyond the official gizmo range. Mods such as Better Placement historically added Z-adjust keybinds. The Steam page for that mod now says much of it landed in vanilla. Extra range is still a mod option, not a promise on a vanilla server.
  • Remember-and-restock racks that save exact poses across a wall. That is Workshop furniture (for example multi-purpose racks). Verify Build 42.20.4 after the loadstring hotfix before you trust a rack mod—see Mods.
  • Moving a fridge with 3D placement. Furniture is a different verb. Wrong tool, wrong noise, wrong strength check.

Multiplayer and performance

Every placed model is a world object. A museum of 200 mugs in one room is a screenshot and an FPS tax—pair with Performance Settings if your safehouse slideshows when you open the door. Hosts can ask players not to 3D-spam the spawn house.

If an item locks to a square after a bad place, pick it up and place again on a flat floor. If it vanishes visually but still occupies the tile, leave the chunk and return; some lighting/placement glitches still exist after 42.20.x hotfixes.

Safehouse workflow that does not get you bitten

Decorate after the room is clear, curtains drawn, and a weapon in hand. Extended Placement is a cursor mode. Zombies do not pause for interior design. Night lighting from Lighting Survival makes wall guns look great and also hides crawlers in the doorway.

Mark a “do not decorate” airlock. The first room inside the safehouse should stay readable: bag drop, melee, flashlight. Put the museum in the bedroom you actually sleep in.

Early Access note

Placement gizmos, wall hang flags, and which item tags count as hangable still take support-update attention through the rest of 2026. After a hotfix, test one wall rifle on a throwaway save before you spend an evening aligning plates. Official mapping-tool and AnimZed work later in the year does not replace “right-click the world item.”

Build 42 finally lets the base look like a home. Keep the tile honest, keep the fire extinguisher off the decorative shelf, and hang the shotgun where you can actually grab it when the window goes.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How do I hang a gun on the wall in Build 42?

Place the firearm on the tile, right-click the world item, open Extended 3D Placement, and move it onto the wall. Vanilla supports hanging guns and crafted melee. Keep the item on an honest tile so you can pick it up later.

Do I need a decoration mod for 3D placement?

Not for basic offsets and wall weapons. Official 42.20 notes shipped the system in vanilla. Mods add extra height range or restock racks—test them on 42.20.4 after the security hotfix.

Why did my placed item freeze or vanish?

Invalid squares and stair climbing caused bugs in earlier 42.x patches. Pick up, move to a flat interior tile, place again. If the model is invisible, leave the chunk and return.

Can I 3D-place furniture like a fridge?

No. Fridges and sofas use Move Furniture. 3D placement is for dropped inventory items in the world.

Does decorating hurt FPS?

Hundreds of world items in one room can. Decorate one wing, not the entire warehouse. See Performance Settings if the safehouse hitchs when you enter.
