Project Zomboid Wash and Dry Clothes in Build 42
Blood, dirt, and wetness are three problems. Washers need water and power; dryers need power; sinks still work after you haul a bucket.
Survivors search “how to wash clothes Project Zomboid” after the first bloody hoodie refuses to dry and the cold moodle stacks on a July night. Build 42 treats blood, dirt, and wetness as separate states. A dryer will not delete blood. A washer will not dry you. Wring-out Workshop mods from Build 41 are the wrong answer on 42.20.4 Stable. This page is the laundry chapter. Insulation and bite padding stay on Clothing and Weather. Wound risk stays on Infection Mechanics.
Three states, three tools
Blood on fabric and skin raises ordinary wound-infection risk and looks like you lost a fight you cannot afford to repeat. Wash it off with water plus soap when you can, or at least rinse at a sink or rain barrel.
Dirt is comfort and hygiene. Filthy clothes feed unhappiness and make long sleeps worse. Wash them. Do not burn your only winter coat because it is brown.
Wetness is temperature. Soaked jeans in rain or after a river swim strip insulation. You can air dry over time, use a clothing dryer (electricity, no plumbing), or stand near heat. Wet plus cold is how healthy characters catch a nasty cold—see Fever and Illness and Winter Survival.
Sinks, tubs, and soap (the default loop)
Before shutoff, residential sinks and bathtubs are the laundry. Right-click clothing in inventory or on the floor near a water source and wash. Soap, shampoo, or similar cleaning items speed and improve the job. Keep a bar in the bathroom crate next to bandages.
You can also wash yourself to clear blood and grime from skin. Do this after corpse hauls and before you eat with dirty hands. Medical and First Aid still wants disinfectant on actual wounds; a shower is not stitches.
Carry a bottle or pot of water after Water and Power Shutoff. Some clients want water in a container rather than a live faucet for cleaning rags. Rain from Water Collectors is medical and laundry infrastructure, not just drinking.
Washing machines
Washing machines spawn in houses, trailer interiors, and laundromats. They are 20-slot containers.
To run one:
- Confirm power (grid or a connected generator).
- Confirm water to the appliance (plumbing or a positive supply). The Turn On option stays hidden until both exist.
- Load dirty/bloody clothes into the machine container.
- Start it and wait. This cleans. It does not replace a dryer if you only care about wetness.
Combo washer/dryers have a mode switch. Washer mode still wants water. Dryer mode wants electricity and does not need a rain barrel plumbed into the unit. Read the context menu twice; people plumb barrels “for the dryer” and then wonder why the option is grey.
Dryers and natural drying
Clothing dryers need electricity only. Load wet clothes, turn on, wait. No water line.
Natural drying always works: hang around indoors, wait, keep a spare dry layer in a crate. Build 42.20 nights run darker—do not stand outside in soaked cotton because you are impatient. A spare outfit at the safehouse is cheaper than hypothermia.
Electrical 3 is the usual gate to pick up washers and dryers (plus the right electrician-type tool). They are heavy. Plan a vehicle from Best Vehicles before you yoink a laundromat row.
After shutoff: a realistic laundry plan
- Bank water in collectors, pots, and the bathtub on day one—First Week.
- Keep soap and a second outfit at base.
- Wash at a collector or with bottled water. Do not drain drinking stores on a full wardrobe every evening.
- If you still have a generator, a dryer is a luxury that costs fuel. Air-dry when you can. Fuel math stays on Fuel and Siphon.
- Bloody combat clothes go in a crate labelled “wash”, not back on the bed.
What not to do
- Do not install Wring Out Clothing or other B41-only Workshop items on a 42.20.4 save. Check Mods and the 26 August loadstring hotfix notes on 42.20.4 Hotfix.
- Do not treat the dryer as a blood eraser.
- Do not wash the only winter layer in January without a dry spare.
- Do not sleep in soaked clothes next to an open window. Sleep and Rest already fights fatigue; wetness should not pile on.
Co-op laundry
Assign one person to keep soap and a generator fuel can for the laundry closet. Bloody tank tops in shared beds are how wound infection spreads through a season that should have been a scratch. Call “washing” on voice so nobody walks off with the only bar of soap during a helicopter lock-in.
Clean clothes are a combat stat. They are also how you stay warm enough to care about Tailoring pads tomorrow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How do I wash clothes in Project Zomboid Build 42?
Use a sink or tub with water and soap, or load a washing machine that has both power and water. Machines clean; they do not automatically dry. See Clothing and Weather for why wet layers matter.
Do I need a washing machine?
No. Sinks work. Machines are faster for bulk laundry when the grid or a generator is up. After shutoff, bottled water and rain collectors replace the faucet.
Does a dryer remove blood and dirt?
No. Dryers remove wetness. Wash blood and dirt first, then dry. Combo units need the correct mode: washer wants water, dryer wants power.
Can I wring out clothes in vanilla Build 42?
Vanilla relies on time, indoor air, heat, or a powered dryer. Old wring-out mods are Build 41 Workshop items. Do not drop them on a 42.20.4 save.
Why won’t Turn On appear on the washer?
The machine needs power and a water supply. After shutoff, plumb or fill according to your client, or wash at a sink with a container. Electrical 3 is for picking the appliance up, not for pressing Start.
