Project Zomboid First Week Checklist

Track survival priorities from spawn through day seven in Build 42.

First Week Checklist

Most Project Zomboid deaths happen before players establish rhythm. They loot random houses, forget to fill bottles, and discover empty taps on day nine without rain collectors ready. The First Week Checklist turns First Week Survival into actionable ticks you can complete solo or with an online co-op squad.

Progress saves in your browser for the session-reset when you start a new character or server season. The checklist does not replace reading guides; it ensures you execute them in order.

First Week Checklist

Tick off the survival priorities that keep new runs alive past day seven.

Day 3–5

Day 6–7

How to use the checklist

Work top to bottom within each day range. Early tasks gate later ones-there is little point barricading upper windows before you own a hammer and nails. Check items only when genuinely complete, not aspirational.

Co-op groups can split columns by player name in voice chat while one person shares screen. Alternatively, screenshot completed sections nightly for Discord logs.

Day 1-7 focus

Secure indoor shelter before sunset, equip the best bag found, fill every water container from taps, and stock bandages plus non-perishable food. These mirror Getting Started and Early Loot Priorities without re-reading full articles mid-loot.

If any day 1-7 box stays unchecked overnight, pause expansion looting until caught up-downstream tasks assume this foundation.

Day 3- focus

Barricade ground-floor entry points, establish a kitchen staging area, locate hardware stores on the Map hub for tools, and begin secondary water plans before Water and Power Shutoff windows close.

Train melee spacing with Combat Basics before clearing high-risk buildings. A checked weapon box means you can shove-stomp reliably, not that you found a gun.

Day 6- focus

Confirm multi-day food buffers, test escape routes (sheet rope or secondary door), and schedule a group review of helicopter and utility timers via Helicopter Event reading.

Co-op teams assign generator scouting only if electrical skill and gas cans exist-otherwise defer to week two in Base Building guides.

After week one

Graduate to occupation-specific goals from Builds Hub, vehicle recovery routes, and farming plots. Reset the checklist when rerolling characters or joining fresh servers documented in Servers and Co-op.

Build 42 Early Access caveat

Task wording assumes Build 42 crafting and loot defaults. Modded servers or sandbox multipliers may let you skip steps-note house rules on your export screenshot. Patch changes may add new mandatory items; compare Build 42 Overview after updates.

Pair with the build planner

Run Character Build Planner before ticking day-one tasks so occupation gear matches planned routes-electricians prioritize generator parts later; burglars prioritize early tool access.

Interpreting partial completion

Yellow zones on the checklist-metaphorically, sections half-done-signal risk. Three filled water bottles among six slots is not water done. One ground-floor window barricaded while the back door remains glass is not base secure. Hold yourself to binary completion: either the task protects you overnight or it stays unchecked.

Speedrun versus learning runs

Experienced players may skip cosmetic steps but should not skip water, medical, or shove practice. Speedrun groups still benefit from shared checklist screenshots to prevent one veteran from sprinting ahead while beginners miss rain collector prep.

Season resets and modded servers

Reset all ticks when joining a new public season or after host wipe votes. Modded loot multipliers may trivialize food tasks-note house rules on your screenshot export so external viewers understand context. After Build 42 patches listed on Updates Hub, scan day 3- tasks for new crafting requirements before assuming prior seasons transfer.

Daily review habit

Spend sixty seconds at dawn each in-game day scanning unchecked boxes. Weather changes, bite events, or helicopter noise can reorder priorities-move barricade tasks earlier if hordes migrated toward your street overnight. Co-op captains can call review during breakfast in-game to keep four players aligned without duplicate loot trips.

Connecting checklist to skills progression

Several boxes implicitly train Skills Hub activities: carpentry from barricades, cooking from boiling water, fitness from sprint loot routes. If boxes stay unchecked because tasks feel slow, that signals sandbox difficulty or trait gaps-not checklist failure. Adjust builds via the planner rather than ignoring water or medical ticks.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Does checklist progress save between browsers?

Progress stores locally in your current browser session. Screenshot or copy notes if switching devices.

Can co-op partners share one checklist?

Yes via screen share or assigning sections verbally. Split day 3- barricade and water tasks by role.

What if I miss a day 1 task?

Pause forward tasks and catch up immediately. Unfilled water containers cannot be fixed after shutoff without rain plans.

Is this checklist for Build 41?

No. It targets Build 42 Early Access priorities aligned with current wiki guides.
