Project Zomboid Bags and Backpacks in Build 42
Capacity, weight reduction, run speed, and where military packs actually spawn.
The first bag you wear decides whether a pharmacy run ends at the trunk or in the street with a broken back. Players search “best backpack Project Zomboid” and “ALICE pack” because the names lie: a military duffel skin is not the 28-slot ALICE pack, and Build 42 added crafted framepacks that beat loot bags on raw capacity. This page is the vanilla loadout guide for 42.20.4: slots, stats, day-one improvisation, where army packs spawn, and when to drop the bag before a fight. Carry-cap math and Heavy Load live on Encumbrance. Pair it with Early Loot and Tailoring if you plan to sew a framepack instead of gambling on camo zombies.
Read the tooltip, not the paint
Wearable bags use capacity (how many units they hold), weight reduction (how much stored weight is ignored while worn), empty weight, and a run-speed multiplier. Organized increases container capacity; Disorganized shrinks it. Check the container header in-game after you take the trait—do not memorize a forum percentage.
Typical vanilla back-slot ladders (confirm on your client after patches):
| Bag | Capacity | Weight reduction | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Military Backpack (ALICE / army camo) | 28 | 85% | Best loot pack for reduction. Run about ×0.94. |
| Large Framepack (crafted) | 35 | 75% | Heavier empty (~4). Tailoring / leather path. |
| Big Hiking Backpack | 22 | 80% | Everyday upgrade. Closets and hikers. |
| Hiking Backpack | 20 | 75% | Common mid-tier. |
| Duffel / golf bag | 18 | 65% | Easy find. “Military” duffel paint is still 18. |
| Small backpack / schoolbag | 15 | 70% | Fine day-one. |
| Satchel | 12 | 65% | Satchel slot, stacks with a back bag. |
| Fanny pack (front or back) | 1 each | 85% | Tiny, two can be worn with a backpack. |
Hand-held plastic bags, garbage bags, and sacks haul bulk but occupy a hand and usually punish run speed. Use them for a one-way dump to the car, then drop them.
Day one: anything that frees a hand
Before a real pack: sheet sling (rip clothing, craft), plastic bag, or schoolbag from a bedroom. Do not walk to Louisville for an ALICE on day two. A hiking pack in a Riverside closet beats a corpse run into a military checkpoint. See Getting Started.
Combat: drop or stash the heavy pack before a messy fight if encumbrance or the run modifier is eating your shove timing. Keep bandages, a weapon, and a water bottle in a fanny pack or main inventory. Combat Basics assumes you can still sidestep.
Where the ALICE pack actually is
It is rare loot, not a map pin:
- Army-outfit zombies — camo, webbing, helmets. Road camps, army surplus density, approaches to Louisville and military checkpoints. One Milk n’ More in Riverside has been filmed with militia zombies inside; that is RNG, not a script.
- Army Surplus shelves — surplus stores across Knox County. Search the interactive map for surplus / army.
- Camping and hiker tables — low odds on the plain ALICE.
- Secret military interiors — only when you can already extract. The pack is not worth a wipe.
If you cannot find one, craft. Build 42 framepacks (small through large) need leather, thread, a pack frame, and tailoring. Alpine / camping magazines and research unlocks matter. The large framepack wins capacity; the ALICE still wins weight reduction for long walks. Pick the job: haul a generator, or stay light on a loot strip.
Extra slots that stack
Wear back + satchel + fanny front + fanny back when you have them. Fanny packs are for lighters, pills, and a spare mag—not cans. Hydration packs and webbing exist in some clothing sets; read the item for extra water or mag slots. Sleeping bags can attach to certain packs (BedrollBottom)—see Tents and Camping.
Co-op and storage
One person in the ALICE, one in a hiking pack, crates at base. Do not duplicate “best bag” hunts while food is still rotting. Label spare packs in a safehouse crate so the next life is not naked.
Common mistakes
- Treating a camo duffel as an ALICE pack.
- Fighting with 40 encumbrance because you would not drop the bag.
- Driving county-wide for one military zombie on day three.
- Ignoring satchels and fanny packs because capacity is 1–12.
- Crafting a huge framepack before you have leather and then dying overweight.
Wear the best reduction you own for travel, the best capacity for a one-way furniture haul, and a sling on day one so you stop leaving hammers on porches.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What is the best backpack in Project Zomboid Build 42?
For loot reduction, the Military Backpack (ALICE, 28 / 85%). For raw capacity, a crafted Large Framepack (35 / 75%). Hiking packs are the practical everyday bag. Confirm tooltips after patches.
Where do I find a military backpack?
Army-outfit zombies, Army Surplus stores, and rare camping loot. Not guaranteed in any one building. Military checkpoints are high risk, not a vending machine.
Can I wear more than one bag?
Yes. Backpack plus satchel plus front and back fanny packs. Hand-held garbage bags are extra haul, not worn slots.
Should I drop my backpack in combat?
If you are overencumbered or the pack’s run penalty is ruining shoves, stash it. Keep a weapon and medical in a fanny pack or pockets.
How do I get a bag on day one?
Schoolbag, duffel, plastic bag, or a crafted sheet sling. Do not delay First Week for an ALICE pack.
