Project Zomboid Butchering in Build 42
Hooks beat dirt, roadkill wastes meat, and leather starts on the beam—not in the bedroom.
Butchering is the Build 42 skill that turns a dead animal into food you can actually store. It is not Animal Care. It is not Tracking. It is the knife-and-hook job after the creature is already down. This page is the processing chapter: field cuts versus a butcher hook, fish fillets, what skill actually changes, why car-killed meat is a trap, and how hides leave the hook toward Tailoring. Living stock, troughs, and stress stay on Animal Care. Wild pursuit stays on Hunting and Tracking. Pens and feed logistics stay on Farming and Animals.
The official wiki last fully audited some butcher tables against older 42.18 notes. Treat yields as living numbers on 42.20.3. The habits below still hold.
What the skill actually does
Butchering raises cut quality and how much usable meat you pull from a corpse. XP comes from butchering animals, pulling parts, and filleting fish. More meat out of a carcass generally means more XP. Reading the matching skill books before a slaughter day is the same rule as every other craft skill.
A sharp knife or cleaver that is not dull is the usual tool. Kitchen knives, hunting knives, stone knives, and forged blades all work if they still have an edge. A butter knife you used as a screwdriver all week will fail you at the hook.
Small corpses—birds, rats, squirrels, frogs, rabbits—can be processed on a crafting surface with the small-animal butcher recipes. Large stock wants a hook.
Field butcher versus butcher hook
You can process a corpse on the dirt. You should not, once you have a choice.
A butcher hook is a placed build. Open the Building menu, place the hook on a tile you control, then carry the corpse to it and use the hook interaction. Current clients do not let you pick the hook back up like a chair. Choose the shed once.
On a hook you get:
- Better meat yield and quality than a field cut.
- Unprocessed hide from large animals that dirt processing often skips.
- A cleaner animation you can actually guard.
Build the hook outdoors or in a ventilated shed, not in the bedroom, and not in sight of live livestock. Slaughter in front of the herd spikes stress and scatters animals—see Animal Care. Blood and rot belong away from sleep tiles and campfire cooking.
If the context menu on the corpse does nothing, open the Crafting panel and run the butcher recipe from there. That is a known Build 42 friction, not a missing knife.
Fish, small game, and the first week
You do not need a cow to start the skill. Fishing plus Slice Fillet on a surface is honest early XP: one uncut fish, one sharp knife, two fillets, a bite of Butchering XP. Trapping rabbits and foraging frogs feed the small-animal recipes the same week.
Cook or preserve the same day. Meat from a hook does not pause spoilage because you were proud of the cut. Cooking and Food Preservation are the next two clicks, not optional flavor.
Roadkill is a tax
Early Build 42 taught people to hit deer with a sedan. Later patches punished that. Animals killed by a car drop much less meat than animals killed with a gun, a blade, or a planned slaughter. A hood ornament is not a harvest. If you need leather and steaks, track, trap, or walk the animal down. If you already flattened it, butcher it anyway for scraps and XP, then stop calling it a food plan.
Leather after the hook
A hide leaves the hook unprocessed. That is not clothing yet.
Typical Build 42 loop:
- Take the hide to a softening beam and de-flesh it with a fleshing tool.
- Decide furred versus crude leather before you dry. Once dry, you cannot de-fur it.
- Mix a bowl of brain tan (brain from the skull plus a bowl of water) and run a tannin barrel when your recipe list asks for it.
- Hang the hide on the matching drying rack: large for cows and adult deer, medium for adult sheep and pigs, small for rabbits and young stock.
- Drying is about a week at mild temperatures. Heat speeds it. Cold below roughly 4 °C stalls it. Rain on an exposed rack pauses the clock.
- Cut large leather into medium, medium into small, then feed Tailoring.
Do this in a dry shed, not on the lawn in November. Winter will freeze your tannery for free.
Hygiene and storage
Process, then wash, then store. Keep knives on the early loot list next to a pot and a can opener. Do not leave a half-finished cow in the kitchen doorway overnight. Frozen or jarred output belongs in the same crates you already use for farm surplus.
Moodles matter. A nauseous butcher in a sealed shed is how you waste a deer. Read Moodles if sickness icons stack after a blood day.
Occupations, books, and co-op
Rancher and other animal occupations help the living side more than they replace Butchering practice. You still have to cut. Read the Butchering book tier that matches your band before a slaughter weekend.
In co-op, one player owns butcher day. One player guards the tree line. One player does not open the pen gate to “watch.” Public servers will steal a hanging hide—dry indoors.
Common mistakes
- Treating Animal Care as if it butchered the corpse for you.
- Field-dressing every cow because the hook “looks late game.”
- Hitting deer with the truck and expecting steakhouse yields.
- Butchering in the chicken run.
- Drying hides in the rain, then calling the skill bugged.
- Leaving meat on the hook tile because the freezer run felt like tomorrow.
Kill cleanly, hang it, cut it, preserve it. That is the whole skill. Everything else is Animal Care and not painting the bedroom floor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How do I butcher animals in Build 42?
Carry the corpse to a butcher hook and use the hook interaction, or run the butcher recipe from the Crafting panel with a sharp, non-dull knife. Small animals can be done on a surface.
Why should I build a butcher hook?
Hooks improve meat yield and quality and let large animals drop unprocessed hide. Field cuts on dirt waste product.
Does hitting animals with a car still work?
You can still flatten them. Later Build 42 patches cut roadkill meat hard. Track, trap, or slaughter if you want real food.
How do I get leather from animals?
Butchering a large animal on a hook can yield unprocessed hide. Soften, tan, and dry it on the matching rack before Tailoring.
Does filleting fish raise Butchering?
Yes. Slice Fillet on uncut fish is honest early XP and pairs with Fishing.
