Project Zomboid Composters and Fertilizer

Rotten berries become bags of compost. Nails and two weeks of patience beat a cursed chemical stack.

Compost and Fertilizer

The search “Project Zomboid compost” spikes the first time a fridge dies and the kitchen is a pile of poisonous mushrooms you foraged by mistake. Build 42.20 composters turn rotten food (and dung) into compost you sack and feed to Agriculture plots. Fresh sandwiches do nothing in the bin. Chemical fertilizer from loot is a different item with a curse risk if you spam it. This page is the carpentry-and-patience chapter. Seasons and pests stay on the agriculture guide. Animal manure logistics stay on Farming and Animals.

Build the box

Recipes live in the Building / Carpentry menu:

  • Shoddy composter: Carpentry 3, 4 planks, 4 nails, hammer. Cheap, ugly, works.
  • Craftsman composter: Carpentry 6, same plank/nail pattern, nicer tile, same job.

Nails are the real gate. Disassemble furniture before you burn it. Carpentry and Early Loot exist so you are not punching trees for a bin you cannot finish. Place the composter outside the sleeping rooms—smell and flies are moodle cousins of corpse piles.

It is also a 20-capacity container. You can stash a saw in it. Only rotten food converts. Do not use it as a second fridge.

How compost actually appears

  1. Dump rotten produce, leftovers, and foraged poison mushrooms/berries.
  2. Animal dung from Animal Care pens also feeds the pile.
  3. Wait on the order of two weeks at default sandbox compost speed.
  4. Right-click the unit. Compost shows as a percentage.
  5. At 10% or more, use an empty sack to Get Compost. That spends 10% and gives a compost bag.

Math players like: about 2% per unit, up to 50 units (ten bags) when full. Your client tooltip wins if a hotfix tweaks the display.

Worms can spawn as a side drop. Collect them for Fishing bait instead of screaming at the UI.

Using compost on crops

Compost bags work like a safe fertility bump. Apply once per plant as agriculture tooltips allow. They help growth without the “I stacked four chemical fertilizers and the plant is cursed” story. Chemical NPK-style bottles from warehouses are strong and dangerous when overdosed—read the plant menu. Agriculture covers water, weeds, mildew, aphids, flies, and slugs. Compost is not a pesticide.

If you have no farm yet, still run a composter. Foraging waste has to go somewhere that is not the hallway. Later the same bin feeds the first cabbage row.

What to throw in (and what not to)

Yes: rotten veggies, rotten meat you will not cook, poisonous foraged plants, spoiled animal products, dung.

No: fresh food you might still eat, non-food junk, gasoline, corpses (that is a medical and fire problem, not a garden problem).

Brewing mash and failed batches belong here too. Food Preservation should claim food before it rots; the bin is the overflow, not the plan.

After shutoff

A composter does not need electricity. It needs time and a sack supply. Paper sacks spawn in warehouses, farms, and stores. Reuse them like bottles. Pair with water collectors so you are not fertilizing dust.

Winter: keep throwing rot in. Harvest in spring. The bin does not care that you are wearing three jackets from Clothing and Weather.

Co-op

Label the tile. One person “does compost” so three people do not empty the same 8% because they each wanted a bag. Nails and sacks go in the farm crate, not in random backpacks headed to Louisville.

Early Access

42.20.4 did not retune compost in the security notes. If a support patch changes convert time, believe the in-game percentage bar. Build 41 “two planks two nails” memory is wrong for the current recipes—bring four and four.

Rot is a resource. The composter is how you stop treating it as trash.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How do I make a composter in Build 42?

Carpentry 3 (shoddy) or 6 (craftsman), 4 planks, 4 nails, and a hammer in the Building menu. Place it outside living spaces. See Carpentry if you are still nail-poor.

Why isn’t my food turning into compost?

Only rotten food (and dung) converts. Fresh items sit there as storage. Wait about two weeks at default speed, then sack at 10% or more.

Is compost the same as fertilizer bottles?

No. Compost bags are the safe farm bump. Looted chemical fertilizer can curse plants if you stack doses. Prefer compost for routine plots.

Do composters need power or water?

No. They need rotten input, time, and empty sacks. Water still matters for the plants you fertilize—use rain collectors after shutoff.

Can I compost corpses?

No. Burn or bury bodies for corpse sickness control. The bin is for food waste and dung, not Knox County’s dead.
