Project Zomboid Essential Tools in Build 42

The small kit that unlocks barricades, cars, clay, and forges—before you chase rare weapons.

Essential Tools Guide

A crowbar is a weapon. A hammer, saw, and screwdriver are a future. Build 42 punishes survivors who fill the bag with bats and forget the tools that open crafting, vehicles, and earth skills. Hardware stores still matter; so do garages, sheds, and the kitchen junk drawer that hides a can opener.

This page ranks the tools that unlock systems, not the tools that look cool on a belt. Pair it with Early Loot Priorities for the first 72 hours and Weapons when you already have a kit and want better melee.

The day-one four

If the house gives you nothing else, leave with these:

  1. Hammer — barricades, disassembly, and half the carpentry UI. Sheet rope plus a hammered window is a first-night exit.
  2. Screwdriver — electronics dismantle for Electrical, some car interiors, and fixture work after shutoff.
  3. Saw or wood saw — planks from doors and furniture so you are not paying nail tax on every wall. Feeds Carpentry.
  4. Can opener — silent run-ender when every can lacks a ring pull. Lives in kitchens; treat it like medical tape.

A bag is not a tool, but without one you will drop the saw to pick up a second frying pan. Occupation kits from Occupations sometimes skip this list; check your spawn inventory before you loot past the garage.

The week-one expansion kit

Once food and water from First Week stabilize, add:

  • Crowbar — doors, crates, and a respectable melee backup.
  • Wrench / lug wrench and jack — wheels and many vehicle actions. A tire pump belongs in the trunk, not the safehouse attic.
  • Scissors, needle, thread — ripped clothes become bandages; tailoring keeps bite layers alive.
  • Digital watch — you cannot catch Life and Living at 12:00 if you guess the hour.
  • Empty sacks and a shovel — sand, gravel, clay, and corpse dirt. Pottery and masonry start here, not at the forge.

Garden stores in Brandenburg and hardware aisles in classic towns are the efficient sources. Do not strip every screwdriver in a block if your co-op already has three.

Crafting-station tools

Build 42 adds tools that look optional until a recipe blocks:

  • Knapping hammer or mallet — kept in hand while you flake flint for Pottery, Knapping, and Masonry.
  • Mason’s chisel and trowel — block cutting and stone walls. A wooden trowel can bridge until you loot or forge metal.
  • Clay sculpting tool — pottery bench work; carve or loot before you need crucibles for blacksmithing.
  • Welding mask and torchWelding and many metal shutters. Propane is a tool-fuel pair; one without the other is scrap.
  • Tongs, hammer heads, bellows — forge literacy. Missing one item looks like a “broken recipe.”

Store station tools in a labeled crate at the workshop door. Walking to Louisville for a chisel you already own in the bedroom is a Build 42 rite of passage.

Vehicle and generator tools

Long routes need a glove-box kit: screwdriver, wrench, lug wrench, jack, tire pump, and one spare tire if weight allows. Engine repair wants higher mechanics and the right parts; tools only let you try. Generators want the magazine or Electrical 3 plus a screwdriver for wiring—fuel cans are tools in the logistics sense. See Generators.

Hotwiring still wants Electrical 1 and Mechanics 2, or Burglar. Tools do not replace that gate.

Tools you can wait on

Sledgehammers are loud and heavy. Fishing rods wait until Fishing is a planned protein loop. Fancy kitchen knives lose to a cleaned crowbar in week one. Extra hammers are good; extra antique saws are weight.

Durability and replacements

Tools break. Maintenance skill and not prying every nail with your only saw keep the kit alive. Build 42 lets you replace more heads through knapping and forging than Build 41 did. That is not a reason to treat the first hammer as disposable on day two. Repair clothing around the kit so you are not cold and tool-less in the same week—Clothing and Weather.

Co-op kit doctrine

One shared toolbox at the safehouse entrance. Call when you take the only jack. Duplicate screwdrivers; do not duplicate sledgehammers. Controller players benefit from a ground crate so they are not radial-menu hunting for the saw during a bite.

Common mistakes

  • Looting weapons through a hardware store and leaving the saw.
  • Carrying five melee weapons and no can opener.
  • Starting masonry without a shovel or empty sack.
  • Leaving the torch at base and the propane in the trunk.
  • Using the only hammer as a primary weapon until it snaps.

If your bag had to pick six items besides food and water, pick hammer, saw, screwdriver, can opener, shovel, and a watch. Knox County will hand you bats. It will not always hand you a second jack.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What tools should I loot first in Build 42?

Hammer, saw, screwdriver, and a can opener, plus a bag to carry them. Expand to jack, wrench, shovel, and a watch in week one. Full day-one order is in Early Loot.

Do I need a sledgehammer on day one?

No. It is heavy and loud. Crowbars open most early doors. Save sledge weight for planned wall or parking-lot jobs.

Which tools unlock Build 42 crafting?

Knapping tools, mason's chisel and trowel, clay sculpting tools, and forge implements. See Pottery and Stone and Blacksmithing.

What belongs in a car toolkit?

Screwdriver, wrench, lug wrench, jack, and a tire pump. Mechanics skill and spare parts still decide whether the engine lives. Guide: Vehicles.

Can I craft replacements when tools break?

More often than in Build 41. Knapping and forging replace some heads and chisels. You still need the first looted kit to reach those stations.
