Project Zomboid How to Plumb a Sink in Build 42

Pipe wrench, roof collector, indoor fixture—prove the draw before shutoff

How to Plumb a Sink

Searching “how to plumb a sink Project Zomboid” usually means one thing: you built rain collectors and still boil every bottle. Plumbing links an indoor fixture to a collector one floor up so you fill pots without climbing the roof in a storm. This page is the Build 42.20.4 step-by-step—placement rules, pipe-wrench checklist, purity testing, and mistakes that leave Plumb greyed out.

Collector recipes and crate-versus-barrel math stay on Rain Collectors. Shutoff timers and bathtub banking stay on Water and Power Shutoff. Map wells you cannot craft are on Wells.

What plumbing actually does

Plumbing does not create new water. It routes stored water from a valid reservoir (usually a rain collector) into a fixture such as a sink, bathtub, toilet, or washing machine. Once connected:

  • You Drink / Fill from the fixture while the reservoir still holds volume.
  • A plumbed sink needs no electricity.
  • A plumbed washing machine still needs power from the grid or a generator.
  • There is no skill gate and no pipe item cost in vanilla—only layout and a pipe wrench.

Tools and fixtures

  1. Pipe wrench in main inventory (not nested in a bag inside a bag, not left in a car trunk).
  2. An indoor water fixture—kitchen sink, bathroom sink, bath, or similar.
  3. A rain collector (crate or barrel) on the floor above that fixture.

You can Pick Up many sinks with the pipe wrench and Place them on counters or crates. Pre-placed house sinks often work if the room is truly indoors. If Plumb never appears, pick up and re-place the fixture inside a sealed room, then retry.

Placement rules that matter

One floor up, 3×3 footprint

Put the collector one floor higher than the fixture, ideally on the same tile first. Community and PZwiki guidance agree the collector must sit within a 3×3 centered on the tile above the sink. Directly above is the layout to prove first.

Open sky for the collector

The collector tile must be outdoors under open sky or it will not catch rain. Roof tiles the game still treats as outside are correct. Enclosed attics and porch overhangs are wrong.

Indoor fixture

The sink tile must read as indoors: walls or wall frames, door or door frame, and a roof. Temporary wall frames work for the plumb action—some survivors frame a rooftop sink, plumb it, then remove frames. Verify Fill still works after you change walls.

Step-by-step first loop

  1. Choose the kitchen or bathroom sink you will live next to.
  2. Build stairs or a sheet-rope path to the roof above that tile.
  3. Craft a rain collector crate (Woodwork 3) and place it directly above the sink under open sky.
  4. Put the pipe wrench in main inventory.
  5. Right-click the sink, not the barrel → Plumb.
  6. Wait for rain or pour river water into the collector if you only need a layout test.
  7. Fill a bottle from the sink and watch the collector level drop. If the level does not fall, the link failed—fix placement before you trust the tap.

Run this test before municipal shutoff when you can. Shutoff is not required for plumbing to work.

Tainted water honesty (Build 42)

Older guides claimed plumbing “filters” rain into clean tap water. On Build 42.19–42.20 many players report the tap inherits tainted status from rain. PZwiki still describes purification on some pages. On 42.20.4, believe the in-game skull/tainted flag:

  • If the bottle shows tainted, boil or use purification tablets.
  • Even a tainted indoor tap still beats climbing the roof during a helicopter pass—you gained convenience, not a magic filter.
  • Wells remain the clean map exception; see Wells.

Expanding the network

After one sink proves a draw, add more collectors inside the valid upper 3×3. Moving the fixture breaks the link; shuffling collectors inside the zone usually does not. Label co-op crates so teammates do not relocate the only plumbed sink “for aesthetics.”

Multiplayer and base layout

  • Plumb the kitchen the group actually cooks in, not a decorative guest bath.
  • Keep a rope or stair escape off the collector roof—dead-end ladders kill during hordes.
  • Pair plumbing with Food Preservation so clean cooking water is not the bottleneck after power dies.

Mistakes that waste a day

  • Right-clicking the barrel instead of the sink.
  • Pipe wrench buried three bags deep.
  • Collector under a porch “because it looks outside.”
  • Assuming Plumb means clean water without reading the bottle tooltip.
  • Plumbing a washing machine and wondering why it needs a generator.

Early Access note

Plumbing purity, rain factors, and UI labels still take support-update attention through 2026. After a hotfix, rebuild one test crate on a throwaway save if Fill behaves oddly. For the broader water plan, return to Rain Collectors and Water and Power Shutoff.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Do I need a pipe item to plumb in Build 42?

Vanilla plumbing needs a pipe wrench and correct placement—no separate pipe crafting cost. Some streamers mention iron pipes from mods or misreads; verify Plumb appears with only the wrench on 42.20.4.

Does plumbing purify rain water?

Do not assume yes. Fill a bottle and read the tainted flag. If it shows tainted, boil or tablet. Plumbing still gives an indoor tap that works without electricity.

Where do I place the rain collector?

One floor above the fixture, same tile first, within a 3×3 above the sink, under open sky. Right-click the sink with a pipe wrench in main inventory.

Can I plumb before water shutoff?

Yes. Test the collector-to-sink draw while municipal water still works so you are not debugging roofs during a thirst crisis.

Why is Plumb missing from the menu?

Check indoors status, collector one floor up, pipe wrench in main inventory, and that you clicked the fixture. Pick up and re-place the sink inside a sealed room if needed.
