Project Zomboid Propane Tanks in Build 42.20

Propane is the bottleneck that turns welding from “I have a torch” into “I can cut a burnt car.” Players search it after their first propane torch clicks empty on a wreck. Build 41 taught backyard grill tanks. Build 42.20 The Big Glow Up added more set tank spawns you can see on the community map—welding shops, metalworking stores, auto shops—plus garage tanks that do not always show on the overlay. What propane is for

A propane torch spends tank units when you weld, cut, or dismantle metal. Burnt-vehicle salvage is a famous hog: several torch uses per wreck in typical balance. Metal walls, crates, and some vehicle jobs drink it too. Oxygen tanks and welding rods are siblings on metal shelves—grab them on the same hardware day, but they are not propane.

You do not drink propane. You do not fuel a generator with it. Petrol and propane are different fluids. Mixing them in your head is how people siphon a grill and wonder why the genny is dry.

Every way to find propane on Build 42 stable

Grill tanks (still the early game)

Suburban propane barbecues often have a tank you can take. Quantity inside is random. The map project marks many grill tiles. Clear the yard, detach the tank, and leave if the street is loud. One tank is a welding afternoon, not a season.

Build 42.20 set spawns

Stable 42.20 added static tank placements in industrial and auto footprints. Community map overlays now show many of them:

• Welding / metalworking stores — highest-density indoor tanks.
• Automotive shops — tanks near work bays.
• Garages — extra tanks exist that may not appear on the public map. Walk the bay; do not trust the overlay as complete.

Random loot still rolls tanks in mini warehouses, sheds, some car trunks, and rare propane vans. On a looted MP server those RNG piles are gone first. Plan set spawns and grills, then accept you will walk farther.

How to use a tank without wasting it

1. Carry a welding mask and torch. You cannot “install propane” into a generator.
2. Refill / swap at the torch when the tooltip says the bottle is low—do not start a burnt-car grind on 5%.
3. Prefer useful cuts: a wreck that yields sheets you need, a wall you will live behind, a vehicle you will drive. Practice-cutting every sedan on the highway is how tanks vanish.

Multiplayer scarcity

Hosts should treat tanks like sledgehammers: counted, labeled, not left on the porch. If the server is a month old, assume grill tiles are empty and run a new-town hardware loop in Brandenburg / Ekron / Irvington before you vote to spawn more loot mods.

When you do not need propane yet

Week one is nails, water, and a bag. Welding is a mid-base skill. A torch in the trunk is fine; a propane pilgrimage through Louisville on day four is how runs end. Learn hotwire and mechanics on cars that still have petrol before you cut them for sheets.

Common mistakes

• Confusing petrol cans with propane tanks.
• Trusting the map overlay for every garage spawn.
• Dismantling every burnt car “for XP” until the only tank is empty.
• Leaving the only tank in a trunk across town.
• Installing a welding mod that still called loadstring after 26 August 2026.

Pin grills, pin welding shops, walk unmarked garages, and spend torch time on metal you will keep. Knox County has more barbecues than it has second chances.
