Project Zomboid Spears in Build 42
Carve a shaft, fire-harden it, and stop treating dual spears like a Build 41 myth.
Spears are the cheap reach weapon that still makes sense when the hardware store is a tomb. In Project Zomboid Build 42 they are no longer a Carpentry party trick labeled “Create Spear.” You Carve Spear under Carving, you may Fire Harden the shaft, and you bind a knife or forged head when you want the stick to last. Every current combat spear is two-handed. The old “one in each hand, one on the back” loadout is dead.
This page is the craft-and-fight companion to Carving and Knapping and the Weapons Guide. Spacing still lives on Combat Basics. Do not skip shove-stomp just because you found a long stick.
Carve Spear
Look in the craft UI for Carve Spear, not the vanished Survivalist label.
- Shaft (consumed): Long Stick, Sapling, rake, mop, broom, hockey stick, gaff hook, or similar long handle. If you lack a Long Stick, carve one first.
- Tool (kept): a sharp knife or meat cleaver that is not dull. The blade takes light wear.
- Output: Wooden Spear.
- XP: Carving, not a generic Carpentry quality story.
Starting condition rolls when the craft finishes. Skill and luck both matter. A level-zero shaft spear is a disposable poke, not an heirloom. Carve two. Keep a spare on the back attachment or in the bag.
Fire Harden Spear
Fire Harden Spear wants a Wooden Spear, a kept sharp knife or cleaver, and a valid open fire—a lit campfire is the usual context. The recipe must be learned. It auto-unlocks around Spear skill 6 and also appears on some literature and trait lists.
The fire-hardened shaft is the upgrade people actually feel: higher max condition, better crit chance, slower condition drop. Watch the short harden video once so you stop waving a raw stick at a stove and wondering why the recipe is grey.
Bind a head
A plain shaft is fine for week one. A headed spear is the mid-game stick:
- Bind Spear Head — Maintenance 1, must learn (auto-learn around Maintenance 3 + Spear 1). Uses zip ties, leather strips, or twine. Slightly sturdier on create.
- Bind Spear Head With Duct Tape — no skill gate. Two duct tape. Easiest early bind. No durability bonus.
- Bind Spear Head With Wire — Maintenance 1, pliers, wire. Similar to the twine bind.
- Assemble Spear — surface craft with a metal or long metal spear head, hammer, and knife. Highest condition metal shafts.
Valid heads include kitchen and hunting knives, screwdrivers, stone or bone blades, broken glass, and forged crude blades. Glass spears hit hard and die fast. Plunger spears are a joke. Forged metal heads belong on a Maintenance character, not on a day-two panic craft.
Combat: reach, multi-hit, charge
Spears poke from farther back than a knife. Many swing for up to two targets, which is useful in a doorway and stupid in a parking lot. The sprint charge still exists: sprint long enough, then the special connects. It is not a guaranteed one-shot on every zombie. Skill, condition, zombie type, and whether a neighbor is already in the animation all matter.
During long finishers you can still be bitten. Charge isolated walkers. Walk back the instant the animation ends. Do not charge sprinters, and do not charge during a helicopter pile.
Two-handed means your off hand is empty. A flashlight or pistol in the other hand is not a spear plan. Keep the spare shaft on your back the way you would carry a shovel.
Repair, recraft, and fishing
Glue and duct tape repair many spears. Knife and metal heads can often be sharpened or reclaimed. Broken wooden spears sometimes return a Long Stick. When a cheap shaft is nearly gone, carve a new one instead of nursing a toothpick.
Most real spears can be used as a fishing spear: no bait, weaker than a proper rod. That is an emergency protein button next to a river, not a reason to skip Fishing. Equip the spear, use the water interaction your client shows, and do not follow Build 41 bag-and-OK steps.
Loadout that does not embarrass you
- Carve two Wooden Spears the afternoon you find a Long Stick and a knife.
- Fire-harden one as soon as you have a campfire and the recipe.
- Bind a kitchen or hunting knife when tape or twine shows up.
- Save metal heads for a Maintenance 1 assemble when you want a shaft that lasts a season.
- Use charge on loners only. Doorway pokes for pairs. Retreat when a third walker joins.
Common mistakes
- Searching Carpentry for “Create Spear.”
- Dual-wielding because a 2022 video said so.
- Fire-hardening without an open fire, then calling the recipe bugged.
- Charging into a group and blaming the weapon for the bite.
- Treating a glass-head spear like a forever weapon.
Carve the shaft, harden it when you can, and keep a spare. Spears are how rural survivors stay in the fight after the last baseball bat chips in a stairwell.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How do I craft a spear in Build 42?
Use Carve Spear under Carving: a Long Stick or similar shaft plus a sharp knife or cleaver. It is not a Carpentry “Create Spear” recipe anymore.
How do I fire-harden a spear?
Learn Fire Harden Spear, stand at an open campfire, and use a Wooden Spear plus a kept sharp knife. The recipe auto-unlocks around Spear 6.
Can I dual-wield spears in Build 42?
No. Current spears are two-handed. Keep a spare on your back or in the bag.
Is the spear charge a one-hit kill?
Not reliably. Charge isolated zombies after a sprint. Skill, condition, and zombie type all change the result.
Can I fish with a spear?
Most combat spears work as no-bait fishing spears. A real rod from Fishing is still better for a long save.
