Prison Raid Strategy Guide

The prison is not a building you clear—it is a building you survive. Unlike other high-risk POIs where greed determines outcome, the prison punishes any gap in planning with permanent character death. Build 42.20 expanded the facility with new wings, basement access points, and updated zombie density that makes older community guides unreliable. This guide is the current tactical reference for prison raids in Build 42.20.4 stable.

Why the prison demands respect

The prison holds the highest concentration of zombies in Knox County. Cell blocks, administrative corridors, and common areas pack zombies in densities no melee build can fight indefinitely. The facility rewards surgical precision—enter, extract high-value loot from administrative sections, and leave—rather than comprehensive clearing.

High-value loot targets include tactical gear, firearms, and medical supplies in areas that are accessible without clearing the entire complex. The administrative building is the primary objective, not the cell blocks.

Pre-raid preparation

Vehicle staging

Stage a vehicle with at least half a tank outside the prison perimeter on a road segment you can see from your entry point. The vehicle must be invisible to the main approach so zombie attention stays focused on the building, not your escape route.

Never leave a running engine near the prison. Sound carries across the entire compound—a running motor at the front gate draws zombies from cell blocks at the rear.

Loadout requirements

  • Primary melee weapon with 70%+ condition or a firearm with suppressed capability
  • Bandages for two serious wounds plus disinfectant
  • A flashlight or headlamp for basement and administrative sections
  • At least one backup weapon
  • Food and water for 30 minutes of sustained activity
  • Sheet rope for emergency exit if stairwell routes become blocked

Intelligence gathering

Before entering, observe the exterior from a distance with binoculars or a high vantage point. Count visible zombies in windows. If you see more than twenty zombies visible from outside, abort and return another day—internal density will be worse.

Identify the entry point. The main gate is a death trap. Look for:

  • Rear perimeter wall damage where vehicles or zombies have created access
  • Drainage or utility access points on the building sides
  • Loading dock doors that may be partially open or damaged

Medical contingencies

Establish a secondary rally point outside the compound. If you become injured to the point where combat is no longer viable, your backup vehicle at the secondary rally point must be reachable without crossing the main compound.

Entry strategy

The rear approach

The safest approach is from the rear perimeter where wall damage or drainage access creates a low-traffic entry. Move along the outer wall, not across open ground. Use vehicle cover to advance, then abandon the vehicle at the wall.

Never approach the main gate. The gate area funnels zombie attention from the entire front compound. Even a quiet entry through the rear puts you in administrative wing territory without crossing the main yard.

First minutes protocol

  1. Enter through the identified rear or side access point
  2. Immediately close the door behind you—this is your temporary anchor point
  3. Assess the immediate room: count zombies, identify exits, note noise sources
  4. Move to the administrative wing using the shortest path with fewest open doorways
  5. Never advance deeper into the compound without a clear exit behind you

Movement discipline

Move deliberately, not quickly. Speed creates noise. Every footstep matters in the prison’s enclosed corridors. Check every door handle before entering—never push through a door expecting it to be closed.

Close doors behind you as you advance. Each closed door creates a barrier between you and zombies you have not yet encountered. This discipline also marks your return path.

Administrative wing operations

Primary loot targets

The administrative building is the objective. Target areas in this order:

  1. Armory-adjacent storage — tactical vests, equipment, and potentially weapons
  2. Records rooms — keys that unlock other sections, documents, and computer equipment
  3. Medical office — first aid supplies, surgical tools, and medication
  4. Staff break rooms — food, tools, and personal items

What not to loot

Cell blocks are not worth the time. The density in cell corridors exceeds what any solo player can handle with standard combat. If administrative areas are compromised, extract immediately—do not fall back to cell blocks as an alternative objective.

Combat in administrative corridors

If you encounter zombies in corridors, use the shove-stomp technique: shove to create distance, advance with the recovery, stomp when the zombie is on the ground. Never fight in open spaces within the prison—corridor walls prevent flanking.

If a corridor contains more than three zombies simultaneously, do not engage. Find an alternate route or extract. The prison punishes extended combat more than any other POI.

Basement access

Build 42.20 added basement access points throughout the prison. Basement stairs appear in:

  • Administrative basement sections
  • Utility and maintenance areas
  • Storage basements beneath older wings

Basements contain additional loot but also additional zombie density. Treat each basement as a separate operation:

  1. Clear the room containing the basement stairs before descending
  2. Leave a marker at the top of the stairs
  3. Descend with a light source and clear the basement one room at a time
  4. Return to the marker before ascending—never ascend with zombies behind you

Basement sound carries up stairwells. One zombie alerting others in a basement can create a cascade that traps you underground.

The extraction

When to leave

Leave when any of these conditions occur:

  • Your primary weapon drops below 50% condition
  • You sustain a wound requiring immediate attention
  • You hear zombie attention converging from multiple directions
  • Your inventory reaches 80% capacity with valuable loot
  • Your mood drops below the threshold where mistakes become likely

Exit protocol

Exit through your entry route. The rear approach that brought you in is the safest exit—zombies near that perimeter are typically fewer than those between you and the main gate.

If your entry route is compromised, use the secondary rally point. Do not attempt to drive from the main gate if you entered through the rear.

Drive at least three city blocks before stopping to evaluate your loot. Zombie migration after a loud event can reach areas you passed through on entry.

Common failures

  • Entering through the main gate because it looks convenient
  • Remaining in the compound after acquiring valuable loot because “one more room” seems possible
  • Fighting cell block density instead of extracting when administrative areas are cleared
  • Leaving a vehicle running near the entry point
  • Entering without a secondary rally point
  • Ignoring basement noise and descending without a light source

The prison rewards patience and extraction discipline. Enter with a plan, accomplish the objective, and leave before the prison realizes you were there.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What is the safest entry point for the prison?

The rear perimeter where wall damage or drainage access creates a low-traffic entry. Never use the main gate—the sound draws zombies from the entire compound.

Is it worth looting the cell blocks?

No. Cell block density exceeds what solo players can handle. Target the administrative building for tactical gear, keys, and medical supplies instead.

Should I bring a firearm to the prison?

A suppressed firearm is useful for emergencies, but gunfire in the prison draws zombies from every wing. Melee with a high-condition weapon is safer for silent operation.

How does Build 42.20 basement access change prison raids?

Basement stairs added in 42.20 create additional loot opportunities but also additional risk. Treat each basement as a separate operation and never descend without a light source.

When should I abort a prison raid?

Abort when your weapon drops below 50% condition, you sustain serious wounds, multiple zombie groups converge, or your inventory reaches 80% with valuable loot. Leaving early preserves the run.
