House Alarms Guide

A locked suburban door looks like free loot until the siren starts. In Project Zomboid Build 42, burglar alarms on houses (and some vehicles) are one of the loudest vanilla noises—roughly 600 tiles, more than double a sawn-off shotgun. Players search “how to disable house alarm” because there is no vanilla disable once it rings. This guide covers how alarms trigger, what you can and cannot know in advance, flee tactics, when an alarm is actually useful, and sandbox knobs.

Pair with Stealth and Noise, Combat Basics, and First Week Survival so day-one bases are not sitting next to untested doors.

How house alarms work

On default Apocalypse-style settings, about 10% of houses carry an alarm. It triggers when you (or a zombie, if sandbox allows) breach a door or window. If doors and windows are already smashed, entering the building can still trip it. The siren runs about twenty in-game minutes and pulls zombies from a huge radius.

Key facts for Build 42.20.4:

  • One shot per building — once triggered, that house’s alarm does not reset for a second comedy pass.
  • Battery after shutoff — after power shutoff, alarms can keep running on battery for a random stretch (commonly cited 0–30 days by default). Instant shutoff does not delete every alarm overnight.
  • No vanilla detector — you cannot scan a wall box and flip it off with Electrical in unmodded play. Mods exist; this wiki documents vanilla.

Soft clues (not guarantees)

You never get a reliable “this house is safe” UI. Soft community heuristics:

  • Unlocked or already broken doors/windows often mean the alarm already fired or never existed—still treat forced entry as risky.
  • Heavily locked suburban homes feel riskier than ransacked trailers, but RNG laughs at feelings.
  • Never stress-test alarms on the block next to your safehouse during week one.

What to do when it rings

  1. Leave immediately. Do not finish the fridge.
  2. Break line of sight and move at least a block away—ideally over a fence line—so inbound zombies path to the house, not your heels.
  3. Do not shoot on the way out unless a grab forces it; gunfire stacks a second migration.
  4. Wait out the siren from cover, then return only when the street density drops.
  5. Optionally treat the emptied neighborhood as a free clear—many veterans use alarms as intentional bait once they have an escape route.

Burning the alarmed house can kill zombies that pile inside, but fire only damages tiles that stay loaded on-screen. Do not AFK expecting off-screen fire to tidy Knox County.

Vehicle alarms

Cars can alarm too—especially during hotwire attempts in crowded lots. Same doctrine: abort, walk away, let the lot eat the noise. See Vehicles Driving and Car Keys before you treat every sedan like free transport.

Sandbox controls

Before you start a world, open sandbox:

  • House Alarms Frequency — Extremely Rare / Rare / Normal / etc.
  • Zombie House Alarm Triggering — whether zombies breaking in can ring the bell near your base.

Career or learning runs often drop frequency to Rare. Hardcore or challenge practice keeps defaults so you learn the flee muscle. Full slider context: Sandbox Settings.

Multiplayer etiquette

Call “alarm” on voice the second it starts. Teammates still looting three doors down will otherwise walk into the inbound wave. Agree whether intentional alarm clears are allowed near the shared base.

Mistakes that end runs

  • Testing every door on your home street on day two.
  • Standing in the doorway “just one more cabinet.”
  • Assuming power shutoff killed all alarms.
  • Confusing house alarms with helicopter meta noise—different timers, same death if you freeze.

Early Access note

Alarm radius, battery duration, and sandbox labels can nudge between support updates. The player lesson stays: vanilla cannot disable a ringing house alarm—distance is the skill.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can I disable a house alarm in vanilla Build 42?

No. There is no Electrical disable once it triggers. Leave the area and let zombies path to the house. Mods may add detection; vanilla does not.

How loud is a house alarm?

About 600 tiles—far louder than most guns. Treat it like a neighborhood event, not a room annoyance.

Do alarms stop after power shutoff?

Not reliably. Many keep running on battery for a random post-shutoff window. Test carefully even after the grid dies.

Should beginners turn alarms off?

Lower House Alarms Frequency in sandbox if early deaths feel unfair. Keep them on once you can flee without panicking—see Sandbox Settings.

Can an alarm help me?

Yes. A triggered alarm can vacuum zombies into one house so you loot the cleared ring—only if you already escaped.
