Project Zomboid A Really CD DA Challenge Guide

Naked, drunk, bleeding, house on fire—Build 42’s classic bad day

A Really CD DA Challenge

A Really CD DA (read: A Really Seedy Day) is Project Zomboid’s infamous challenge inspired by Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead’s “Really Bad Day.” Build 42.20 returned it with sharper tooltips and loot tables that respect the glow-up map. This page is the dedicated runbook—spawn hell, first sixty seconds, north farmhouse routing, and why Apocalypse habits fail here.

Read Challenge Modes for the wider rotation (Top of the World, 28 Seconds Later, Winter is Coming). Do not attempt CDDA before you can survive a normal First Week.

What the challenge forces

Regardless of character clothing picks, you begin:

  • Naked (starting gear stripped)
  • Wet, drunk, cold/runny nose
  • Deep glass wound in the groin (limping bleed)
  • Inside a burning one-story house in northern Muldraugh

World pressure typically includes:

  • Winter start
  • Insane zombie population
  • Instant water and power shutoff
  • ~13 months since apocalypse (eroded world, looted shelves, rotten perishables)
  • Fast erosion

The whole Knox County map is explorable; only the spawn is locked to that Muldraugh house.

First sixty seconds

  1. Pause if needed and scan cupboards for a pan, food, or anything that becomes a bandage.
  2. Do not stand in fire—burns end runs before zombies do.
  3. Rip curtains into bandages. Many guides say do not remove the glass until you can stitch; bandage over the shard if that is what your client requires to stop the bleed spiral—verify the Health panel.
  4. Exit the house toward cover. Kill one zombie for clothes and shoes if the street allows; barefoot winter gravel is a second injury.
  5. Break line of sight into trees. Your cough/sneeze from the cold is free noise—Stealth matters immediately.

Where to run

Classic advice: push north / northeast toward the isolated Muldraugh north farmhouse (confirm pins on the interactive map / Map Project). Farm staging beats downtown density while you heal.

Once indoors:

  • Search bathrooms and crates for needle and thread to stitch the deep wound.
  • Prioritize warm layers—winter will kill as surely as bites.
  • Assume perishable food is rotten; hunt cans and foraging calories.

Build 42 houses can be randomly trashed or burnt—no route is guaranteed every seed. Have a backup cabin or shed in mind.

Character creation tips

Favor survivability over loot fantasy:

  • Traits that protect against cold, illness, and low endurance (community favorites often include Outdoorsman, Athletic, Wakeful—adjust to your point budget).
  • Avoid Slow Healer if you want the groin wound to ever close.
  • Occupations with outdoor or medical lean help; min-max guns can wait—see Occupations.

Mid-run priorities

  • Warmth and shoes before sightseeing Louisville.
  • Needle before long travel.
  • Noise discipline—insane pop turns every alarm and gunshot into a death sentence; read House Alarms.
  • Spears and foraging when hardware is empty—Spears, Carving.
  • Accept that water is boiled forever—instant shutoff means rain collectors and plumbing are late luxuries.

How this differs from Apocalypse

Apocalypse teaches orderly first weeks. CDDA teaches damage control under RNG. You will die to fire, bleed, cold, or a sneeze pull. Journal why, reroll, improve. That is the mode.

Multiplayer

Most CDDA learning is solo. Private co-op can attempt it for comedy—expect staggered deaths and loot scavenger ethics arguments.

Early Access note

Challenge balance and available rotation entries shift during Build 42 support updates. Always re-read the in-game tooltip on Start day. Official notes win over any frozen wiki checklist.

After a challenge patch, confirm A Really CD DA is still on the list before you schedule a stream week. If the entry was temporarily removed, practice Winter is Coming or a denser scenario via Challenge Modes first, then return when rotation brings it back.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What does A Really CD DA mean?

It is a punny title for A Really Seedy Day, inspired by Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead’s Really Bad Day challenge.

Where do I spawn?

A burning one-story house in northern Muldraugh. Flee north toward quieter farm staging when the seed allows.

Should I pull the glass out immediately?

Stop the bleed and escape fire first. Stitch with needle and thread when you find them—many runs die removing glass with no bandage plan.

Is the whole map available?

Yes. Only the spawn is fixed to that Muldraugh house; Knox County remains explorable under insane population pressure.

Should beginners play CDDA first?

No. Clear a normal Apocalypse week via Getting Started and Challenge Modes first.
