Project Zomboid Crowbar in Build 42: Weapon and Tool

The long blunt that lasts a season—and the pry myth that Workshop mods keep selling.

Crowbar Locations and Uses

If you ask Knox County for one melee tool that should still be in the bag in month two, the honest answer is a crowbar. Players search “best melee Project Zomboid” and land on katanas. Those break, hide, and cannot unboard a window. The crowbar is Long Blunt with condition 15 and a 1-in-70 degrade roll—community math lands near a thousand hits before Maintenance. Damage is moderate. The job is not dying when the bat snaps and taking wood barricades off without a saw circus. This page is the Build 42.20.4 field manual: where they spawn, what vanilla actually lets you pry, and why a crowbar is the wrong answer to a gun store cage.

Pair it with Weapons for the rest of the melee ladder, Barricades for boarding, Sledgehammer for Destroy, and Combat Basics so you stop swinging it like a sledge.

Read the stats, not the meme

Vanilla crowbar (and the forged lookalike) is two-handed Long Blunt, weight 2.0, range about 1.25, crit around 20% with a 2.5× multiplier—not the old “6× crit” forum copy. Door damage is 8. An axe eats doors; a crowbar nips them. If you need a house open now, chop or disassemble with hammer and screwdriver. Save the bar for zombies and boards.

Multi Hit up to three targets exists on the weapon script. Default Apocalypse turns Multi Hit off. Do not plan a horde-clear around a sandbox box you did not tick.

Tags that matter: crowbar, removebarricade, killanimal. It is also large steel if you ever smelt. It is not a lockpick and not a vanilla “pry locked door / car” verb. Those options come from Workshop mods. On a vanilla server they will not appear. See Mods before you rage at the radial menu.

What you use it for

  1. Daily melee — reach, knockback, and a condition curve that outlasts bats and nailed bats. Keep it on the back slot when you can; equipped tools weigh less than the same bar bouncing in main inventory. That math is Encumbrance.
  2. Remove wooden barricades — right-click a boarded window or door with the crowbar (or claw hammer / tire iron / some axes) equipped. You get planks back. The nails are gone. Metal sheet and rod barricades want a welding torch, not a pry bar.
  3. Animal kills — the tag exists. Hunting still belongs on Hunting. Do not walk into a cow with a crowbar as your livestock plan.
  4. Emergency doors — you can beat a wooden door down. You will hate how long it takes. Bring an axe or the disassemble pair.

You cannot Scrap gun-store metal bars with a crowbar. That is torch plus welding mask—or a sledge Destroy on a wall tile. Full entry order is Gun Store.

Where they spawn

High-odds categories, not a marked closet:

  • Hardware and tool stores — shelves, back crates, the same trip as nails and a hammer.
  • Garages, sheds, warehouses — metal shelves, tool chests, factory floors.
  • Police and industrial vehicles — trunks and beds. Not a scripted gift.
  • Construction piles and work vans — outdoor tool stories.
  • Forge — Build 42 can forge a crowbar once you have the recipe path. Confirm the tooltip. That is a month-two answer, not day one.

Kitchens are for can openers. Do not empty West Point bedrooms for a bar. Pin hardware on the interactive map and walk at noon.

Repair and replacements

Community repair tables for 42.19–42.20 still show no duct-tape / glue recipe on a crowbar. It lasts so long that replacement is the plan: loot a second, park it in the safehouse crate, keep the primary on your back. Do not spend epoxy on a tool the county still drops. Headed axes and knives get the fancy reassembly; this bar does not.

Maintenance skill still stretches hits. Train Long Blunt on junk before you take the good bar into a warehouse.

Loadout rules

Week one: any long reach (shovel, bat) until the crowbar appears, then keep the crowbar. A nailed bat hits harder and dies faster—fine as a spare, bad as your only steel. A sledge is for walls, not streets. A spear is cheap reach from Spears when steel is gone.

Co-op: one fighting crowbar per scout is enough. Duplicate finds go in the labelled crate, not four backpacks. Controller players want it on a hotbar, not lost in a duffel.

Common mistakes

  • Treating it as a door key or car-pry in vanilla.
  • Swinging it at gun-store cages.
  • Using it as the only door-breaker and wondering why the animation lasts a season.
  • Leaving it in main inventory while a bag is empty on the floor.
  • Repairing it with tape that the recipe will not accept.

Hardware at noon, back slot, boards off with the same tool you fight with. That is the crowbar economy.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Where do I find a crowbar in Build 42?

Hardware stores, garages, warehouses, and work vehicles. Forge one later if loot is gone. Pin tool stores on the interactive map.

Can I pry open locked doors or cars with a crowbar?

Not in vanilla. Pry-open is a Workshop verb. Vanilla options are keys, hammer-plus-screwdriver disassemble, melee on wood, or sledge Destroy.

Does a crowbar open gun store bars?

No. Metal bar tiles need a welding torch and mask, or Destroy on a wall. See Gun Store Entry.

Is the crowbar the best melee weapon?

It is the best common *durable* Long Blunt on default Apocalypse. Damage is mid. Axes and crafted bats hit harder and wear faster. Read Weapons.

Can I repair a crowbar with duct tape?

Usually no. Loot a spare and park it at base. Spend adhesives on weapons that actually accept the recipe.
