Project Zomboid Where to Find Nails in Build 42
Hardware routes, box math, scrap fallbacks, and when to stop dying for fasteners.
Nails are the fastener that stops a Knox County run more often than any named weapon. You can live a week on canned soup. You cannot board a window, hang a sheet rope, or finish a rain collector without them. Players search “where to find nails Project Zomboid” because residential kitchens lie: bedrooms and pantries almost never carry boxes. This page is the Build 42.20.4 loot map—categories that actually roll nails, how boxes versus loose stacks work, when to scrap furniture, and the blacksmithing escape hatch when the county is empty.
Pair it with Essential Tools for the hammer and saw you need on the same trip, Carpentry for what those nails buy, and Barricades so you do not open a whole box for one window.
What you are actually looking for
Three item shapes matter:
- Loose nails — tiny stacks. Barricades and many recipes consume these. A closed box will not board a window until you open it or the build action auto-opens it.
- Box of Nails — one inventory slot, 100 nails inside. Heavier while closed than the same nails once spilled. Carry boxes for stock; open a small stack only when you will barricade or nail a rope the same hour.
- Carton of Nails — warehouse bulk (multiple boxes). Rare. Treat it as a base crate, not a backpack prize.
Build recipes that want nails will often auto-open a box in inventory. Plank barricades and sheet-rope placement want loose units. If the action is grey, open the box by hand.
High-odds loot, not house tours
Skip bedroom drawers. Hit tool-shaped containers:
- Hardware and tool stores — carpentry shelves, misc tool counters, back-room crates. Nail boxes are among the highest-weight rolls on carpentry shelves. Riverside, Muldraugh, and the glow-up towns all have at least one hardware footprint; use the interactive map to pin “tools / hardware” before you walk.
- Garages, sheds, and unfinished houses — toolboxes, floor piles, workbenches. Lower odds than a real store, but you are there for early loot anyway.
- Warehouses and factory floors — crate rows, metal shelves, contractor storage. Same industrial loop as sledgehammers.
- Construction and work vehicles — trunks and beds. Not a scripted gift. Check branded vans the way you check Lectromax for sledges.
- Carpenter tool piles — outdoor stacks near jobsites.
Do not empty West Point apartments hunting a box. That is how people die for a fastener they could have grabbed on a quiet hardware run at noon.
Sandbox loot abundance stretches the wait. It does not move nails into ovens. Ultra-rare settings can hide a box for weeks. Plan scrap and forge, not a reset.
Weight math that ruins bags
A closed box is denser storage than the same 100 nails loose. Opened stacks eat encumbrance. Keep boxes closed in the hiking pack until you reach the safehouse crate. If you must barricade on the road, open one box, take a small loose pile, and leave the rest boxed.
Organized trait helps container capacity. It does not make a carton light. Use a vehicle trunk from Best Vehicles after week one.
Scrap furniture when stores fail
Disassemble wooden beds, wardrobes, and tables with a hammer (and often a saw) from the Move Furniture scrap mode—see Move Furniture. Output is chance-based, not a nail factory. Higher Carpentry improves material return. Noise is real. Clear the room first.
Default Apocalypse dismantle XP cutoff can starve early Carpentry XP from scrap. You still get nails and planks. Do not plan your whole skill grind on breaking couches unless you raised that sandbox cap.
Forge and craft when loot dies
Build 42 blacksmithing can produce nails once you have a forge, fuel, and metal. That is a late answer: charcoal, heat, and time. It is the correct answer on a looted multiplayer server or a month-two solo map. Confirm the recipe tooltip in your 42.20.4 client; support patches still tune outputs. Crafting and Forging is the workstation chapter.
Screws are not nails. Metal walls want welding and propane, not a nail box. Do not spend a hardware day on the wrong fastener.
How many to stock
There is no magic number. Fill one crate from a single hardware run before you start airlock walls. A first-week house needs enough for a few windows, one sheet rope, and a small collector—not a warehouse. Co-op: label the crate. Silent nail theft stalls builds faster than zombies.
Common mistakes
- Searching kitchens and bathrooms.
- Opening every box in the field and walking home overweight.
- Barricading with a closed box and wondering why the action fails.
- Burning the only nail stock on practice walls in the woods.
- Ignoring scrap and forge after twenty empty shelves.
Hardware at noon, crate at base, boxes closed until the build starts. That is the whole nail economy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Where do nails spawn most in Build 42?
Hardware and tool stores (carpentry shelves and crates), then garages, warehouses, and work vans. Kitchens are a waste of time. Pin stores on the interactive map.
Should I open boxes of nails immediately?
No. Keep boxes closed for weight. Build actions often auto-open them. Open a box by hand when you need loose nails for plank barricades or sheet ropes.
Can I craft nails if loot is gone?
Yes, through blacksmithing once a forge is running. Scrap wooden furniture for a chance at nails sooner. Confirm recipes after patches.
Why won’t my barricade use the box in my bag?
Barricades want loose nail units. Open the box or let a carpentry build consume it. Check you also have a hammer and planks.
How many nails do I need in the first week?
Enough for a few windows, one sheet rope, and a small rain collector. Fill a crate before mega-walls. See First Week.
