Project Zomboid Brandenburg, Ekron, and Irvington

How to loot and base in the Build 42.20 western towns without treating them like old Muldraugh.

Last updated:

Brandenburg Ekron Irvington

Build 42.20’s Big Glow Up did not only paint extra trees on Knox County. It roughly doubled the playable surface and dropped three western settlements that veterans still navigate like tourists: Brandenburg, Ekron, and Irvington. Old YouTube lines that start in Muldraugh and end at the Louisville mall skip the towns that now carry mid-game hardware, seed shops, and farmhouse bases.

This page is the expedition guide. For a one-paragraph blurb on every settlement, stay on Knox County Towns. For spawn math, use Starting Locations. Come here when you want a shopping-center loop, a quiet farm start, or a western staging town before you touch Louisville skyscrapers.

Why these towns exist on a 42.20 save

The official mapping pass added on the order of 1,400 unique buildings and grew the tile library toward 35,000 tiles. Brandenburg, Ekron, and Irvington are where that budget shows up as new commercial footprints, farm roads, and basement-heavy blocks. They are also where Build 41 muscle memory fails: parking lots are larger, interiors were rewritten, and hardware density is uneven on purpose.

Treat the western map as a triangle:

  • Ekron — quiet rural start, weak hardware, strong fields and animal space.
  • Brandenburg — commercial capital of the west, Pond View-scale shopping, louder parking lots.
  • Irvington — smaller downtown plus farm edges; the bridge between the other two.

Drive the triangle; do not live in all three at once.

Ekron: the farm start that starves for nails

Ekron is the town players pick when they want farming and animals on day three. Farmhouses on approach roads, fields for plots, and hunting access from Hunting and Tracking make it a husbandry classroom. The trap is hardware. There is no comfortable big-box loop inside town. You will run out of nails, saws, and generator parts unless you schedule Brandenburg trips.

Play Ekron if you want low early zombie pressure, wells or rural water options, and space for pens. Leave Ekron when your First Week checklist still lacks a hammer, saw, and junkyard metal. Park the haul truck facing the highway before you start a forge project from Blacksmithing.

Co-op groups should not all spawn Ekron unless one player owns the Brandenburg run. A four-person farm with one screwdriver is a sitcom.

Brandenburg: shop, do not camp the lot

Brandenburg is the western loot city. Players route the Pond View / Gun View-style shopping cluster for gardening stores, tool shops, and a Giga Mart that actually carries seeds, nails, and household bulk. That is why Ekron survivors drive here for turnip seeds and agriculture books instead of praying on farmhouse shelves.

Strengths: commercial density, vehicle-friendly lots, mid-game guns and tools without Louisville infection floors, river and farm edges for best base locations on the outskirts.

Weaknesses: parking-lot sightlines, zombie clusters on retail strips, helicopter migration that turns a “quick seed run” into a car-door fight. Do not base in the main lot. Base on a farm or waterfront near Brandenburg and treat the shops as a loot route with a written exit.

Night loot in Brandenburg after the 42.20 lighting pass is a bad joke unless you read Lighting and Night Survival and bring spare flashlight batteries. Basements under retail blocks are Basements and POIs content—clear stairs, do not skip them for one more aisle.

Irvington: the connector town

Irvington sits between Brandenburg’s commercial pull and deeper wilderness. Expect a smaller grid, grocery and clinic-scale loot, and farmhouse bases within walking distance of town amenities. It is the right home if your group splits roles: one player farms, one player runs Brandenburg twice a week, nobody lives in the mall.

Strengths: shorter medical runs than pure rural tiles, new basements in reworked blocks, highway links both ways.

Weaknesses: veterans still get lost; store types may not match the last video you watched. Walk the downtown once on a throwaway character after each mapping hotfix.

Country homes on the Irvington approach—three-story houses with garages, wells, and pond access—score well on the best base locations checklist. Confirm wells and fences in your save; glow-up tiles moved some driveways.

A practical western week

  1. Spawn or relocate to Ekron or Irvington if you want space; Brandenburg outskirts if you want shops in walking distance and accept more noise.
  2. Day 1–3: residential food, bags, and a vehicle from Vehicles and Mechanics.
  3. Day 4–7: one Brandenburg commercial loop for seeds, tools, and skill books from Skill Books, TV, and VHS.
  4. Week two: decide whether Louisville is even necessary this month. For many animal and forge runs, it is not.

Multiplayer on the western map

Pin a rally lot outside Brandenburg retail, not in it. If someone dies in Pond View, the rest of the group should not respawn-sprint into the same parking row. Share a marked farm as the only “home” icon so three bases do not split generators.

Early Access mapping note

Road hooks and store interiors still move in Build 42 support patches. After 42.20.x hotfixes, re-walk one commercial block before you bet a hardcore character on a remembered seed aisle. Official work through the rest of 2026 still includes mapping-tool updates; the towns will keep changing at the edges.

Learn the western triangle once. After that, Louisville becomes a choice instead of a default.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is Brandenburg a good starter town in Build 42.20?

It is a great loot town and a noisy home. New players usually survive longer basing on Ekron or Irvington farm edges and driving into Brandenburg for shops.

Why is Ekron hard if it is quiet?

Zombie pressure is low, but hardware and bulk seeds are thin. You need planned loot routes to Brandenburg or you stall carpentry and farming.

Should I skip Louisville if I live out west?

Often yes for the first month. Brandenburg covers mid-game tools and groceries. Save Louisville for specialty and endgame risk.

Where should a co-op group meet in Brandenburg?

Pick a lot or side street outside the main retail cluster and mark it. Do not rally in the shopping-center aisle you just cleared.

Did 42.20 change these towns after unstable?

Yes. The glow-up reworked interiors and added basements. Re-walk blocks even if you played 42.19. Overview context is in Build 42.
