Project Zomboid Tents and Camping in Build 42

Pack a kit, attach a bedroll, sleep outdoors once—then get walls before winter.

Tents and Camping

Build 42 sold camping as a real kit: tents, sleeping bags that pack onto backpacks, and an improvised tent from tarp and sticks. Players search “Project Zomboid tent” because the old right-click “put up tent” habit moved into pack / unpack recipes and the Place furniture flow. This page is vanilla 42.20.4 camping: what a tent is for, how to craft a tarp kit, where loot kits spawn, and why a tent is a night on the road, not a safehouse. Pair it with Sleep and Rest for bed quality, Bags for bedroll attachments, Foraging for sticks, and Winter Survival so you do not freeze in nylon.

What a tent actually does

A placed tent is a 2-tile-ish shelter you can sleep in with average bed quality—better than dirt, worse than a proper bed. It is not a lockable house. Zombies path. Rain still exists around it. Helicopter days do not care that you brought a flysheet.

Sleeping bags are the lighter cousin: sleep quality, pack into inventory, and many bags offer a BedrollBottom attachment so the roll hangs on the backpack instead of eating a slot. Read the item tooltip. Not every schoolbag has the attach point.

Loot kits versus improvised kits

Tent Kit / Camping Tent items spawn in camping stores, sporting goods, some warehouses, and outdoor shelves. Camping first-aid kits on those same shelves were patched to actually contain loot in early 42.x—still loot the aisle.

If you cannot find a factory kit, Make Tent Kit (improvised) typically wants:

  • 1 tarp
  • 4 tent pegs (tag tentpeg)
  • 2 wooden rods or tree branches
  • 1 long stick or sapling

Sticks come from foraging Search Focus Firewood and from breaking bushes. Tarps also line rain collectors—do not spend the only tarp on a tent if shutoff is this week.

Pack Tent / Unpack Tent convert between the placed world object and the inventory kit. Build 42.1 fixed several “cannot pack” bugs. If a world tent will not pick up, you may be looking at a scenery tent that is not a moveable kit—walk away.

How to place and pack

  1. Carry the unpacked or packed kit as the tooltip demands (NeedsPackedTent exists on some items—read it).
  2. Use Place from inventory or the Move Furniture Place mode. Official sound maps use TentPutUp / TentTakeDown.
  3. Sleep via the tent interaction, same rules as beds: fatigue, pain, panic, and multiplayer SleepAllowed still apply. Sleep.
  4. Pack before you leave. An abandoned tent is a loot pin for the next player and a fire risk if someone throws a Molotov.

Do not place a tent in a road. Do not block your only sheet rope. Do not camp in a Louisville alley “to save time.”

When camping is correct

  • A one-night push between towns when you will not reach a house before dark.
  • A hunting overnighter next to a rural loop—see Hunting—with a car for extract.
  • A forage trip that ran long, with a fire downwind and never inside the fly.

When camping is wrong: first week, helicopter window, winter without insulation, any night you could have spent behind a locked door in Rosewood. A tent does not replace barricades.

Co-op

One tent, two sleeping bags if you have them. Assign who packs in the morning. Do not leave the kit on the ground “for later” on a public server.

Common mistakes

  • Spending the only tarp on a tent before water shutoff.
  • Treating a decorative park tent as a pickup kit.
  • Sleeping in a tent beside a generator and calling it stealth.
  • Attaching a bedroll to a bag that has no attach point and wondering where the slot went.
  • Winter camping in a T-shirt because “tents are shelter.”

Use the kit as a bridge between houses. The house is still the plan.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How do I craft a tent in Build 42?

Loot a Tent Kit, or craft an improvised kit from a tarp, four pegs, two rods or branches, and a long stick or sapling. Then Place / unpack it. Confirm ingredients on your client.

Can I attach a sleeping bag to a backpack?

Many sleeping bags use a bedroll attachment on packs that provide BedrollBottom. Hiking and framepacks often work; tiny schoolbags may not. Read the tooltip.

Is a tent a safe base?

No. It is average-quality sleep with no real door. Prefer a safehouse after the first night on the road.

Why can’t I pick up this tent?

Some map tents are scenery. Kits pack via Unpack/Pack recipes or furniture pickup. Build 42.1 fixed several pack bugs; scenery still will not move.

Should I camp in winter?

Only with insulation, a heat plan, and a house nearby. See Winter Survival and Clothing.
