Project Zomboid Sleep, Beds, and Fatigue
Beds, pillows, and why sitting is not the same as sleeping in Build 42.
Sleep is not a cutscene you skip. In Project Zomboid Build 42, Fatigue is a separate meter from the Endurance you burn by sprinting and swinging. Mixing those two is how people die in a doorway they could have cleared an hour earlier. This page splits the actions: when to Sleep, when to Rest, what a bed actually changes, and why a public server can refuse the whole loop.
Pair it with Moodles so you can read the icons, and with Campfires because a tired survivor often cannot even place a fire. Medical pain that blocks sleep belongs on Medical and First Aid.
Sleep versus Rest
Sleep (right-click a bed, sofa, tent, car seat, or the ground) is the only reliable way to clear Fatigue—the Tired / Exhausted / Ridiculously Tired stack. Time jumps in single player. You are helpless until you wake.
Rest (sit on furniture, or the dedicated rest action when endurance is wrecked) recovers Endurance—the winded, heavy-swing feeling after a chase. Rest does not replace a night in a bed. If you are Ridiculously Tired, sitting on a porch will not make you a fighter again. If you are only winded, do not waste a four-hour sleep in an uncleared house just to catch your breath.
You do not auto-pass-out from staying awake. The worst Tired moodle is Ridiculously Tired with brutal weakness. Plan the bed before combat and driving become jokes.
How to sleep without dying
- Clear visible, chasing, or very close zombies. Sleep refuses when it is not safe.
- Pick a real sleep surface. Not every chair counts.
- Right-click for Sleep, Sleep on Ground, or Sleep in Tent. In a car, use the vehicle radial while seated.
- Confirm the dialog. Single player calculates a duration and fast-forwards, clamped to 3–16 hours. Multiplayer with sleep enabled lets you pick hours, then waits for the group.
Barricade first. Close curtains if you care about light. Never start a long sleep during a helicopter window in a house you have not finished clearing.
Bed quality, pillows, and duration
Duration is calculated, not a fixed “everyone sleeps eight hours.” Higher Fatigue means a longer calculated night. Then the game applies surface quality and traits, then clamps.
- Good bed (and some pillow upgrades): shorter calculated sleep.
- Average bed: no extra hour tax.
- Bad bed / vehicle seat: longer calculated sleep. Cars start as poor beds.
- Floor / ground: a harsh multiplier. Still clamped to 3–16 hours afterward.
A pillow in hand, on the bed tile, on the seat, or in the tent container can bump quality. Loot pillows on the same early loot pass that grabs sheets. Car naps without a pillow are how scouts wake still tired and immediately crash the sedan.
Traits that change the night
- Wakeful (Needs Less Sleep): about ×0.75 on calculated length. Not a hard-coded six hours.
- Sleepyhead (Needs More Sleep): about ×1.18. Not a hard-coded twelve hours.
- Restless Sleeper (Insomniac): roughly ×0.5 recovery efficiency. You spend more calendar time for less Fatigue relief.
Wakeful and Sleepyhead do not stack. Old forum posts that print exact hour tables are Build 41 folklore. Check your trait card in the Character Build Planner before you take Insomniac for points.
When Sleep is grey or missing
- Zombies nearby or chasing.
- Panic of any level, unless Sleeping Pills are strong enough to bypass the gate.
- Pain at level 2 or worse while you are not yet extremely tired. Painkillers first.
- Exercise still running. Finish or cancel the workout from Fitness.
Sleeping Pills help you fall asleep and can punch through pain or panic gates at a high enough dose. Loot bathrooms and first-aid kits. Painkillers are the cleaner fix when pain is the only block. Alcohol is not a sleep system. It will not clear the eligibility checks, and stacking booze with sedatives is how you wake into a worse moodle pile.
Multiplayer: SleepAllowed and SleepNeeded
On dedicated and listen servers, two flags decide whether this page even applies:
- SleepAllowed — players may sleep when tired. Off means no bed workflow.
- SleepNeeded — players gain Fatigue and actually need sleep. Ignored if SleepAllowed is off.
Turn both on only when the group wants full Fatigue gameplay. Time speeds up when everyone is asleep. If one scout stays up “just to sort loot,” the night never advances. Agree on a sleep window the same way you agree on a safehouse. Host notes live on Dedicated Servers and Sandbox Settings.
First-week habit
On days one through seven, treat orange Tired as a stop sign. Claim a bedroom, hang a sheet rope, then sleep before you start a loot route that needs real swings. Coffee and pills buy a short extra window. They do not replace the bed.
Common mistakes
- Treating Rest as Sleep and wondering why the Tired icon never leaves.
- Sleeping on the ground in a carport “because it is inside-ish.”
- Starting a 12-hour sleep with the helicopter due.
- Taking Insomniac for points, then complaining the nights last forever.
- Hosting a server with SleepAllowed off and asking why nobody can sleep.
Clear the room, pick a real bed, add a pillow when you can, and sleep before Ridiculously Tired turns a shove into a funeral. Knox County does not knock you out for free.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How do I sleep in Project Zomboid Build 42?
Right-click a bed, sofa, tent, car seat, or the ground and choose Sleep. Nearby zombies, panic, and pain can block the option.
What is the difference between Sleep and Rest?
Sleep clears Fatigue (Tired). Rest recovers Endurance after sprinting or fighting. Sitting will not fix Ridiculously Tired.
Why can't I sleep even in a house?
A zombie is too close, you are panicked, you are in pain, or you are still exercising. Painkillers or Sleeping Pills can open the gate.
Do pillows matter in Build 42?
Yes. A pillow can raise bed quality so the calculated night is shorter and more effective, especially in cars and on average beds.
Why can't anyone sleep on our multiplayer server?
Check SleepAllowed. If it is off, beds do nothing. SleepNeeded only applies when sleep is allowed—see Sandbox Settings.
