Project Zomboid Brewing in Build 42
Alcohol is mood and Molotovs. Vinegar is how jars outlive the fridge. Both start with barrels, grain, and patience.
Brewing is one of the Build 42 crafts people search after the last grocery vinegar bottle is gone and the unhappiness moodle will not leave. On 42.20.4 Stable it is a skill plus stations, not a Build 41 loot-only joke. You grow or loot grain and fruit, you ferment, you drink or distill the result, and if you leave alcohol to sour you get vinegar for Food Preservation. This page is the homestead loop. Season windows live on Agriculture. Cooking meals stay on Cooking.
Early Access still moves recipe names. If a craft is grey, hover it—skill, magazine, occupation, or barrel missing.
Why brewing exists in a zombie game
Unhappiness and boredom eat long winters. A controlled drink is a tool, not a personality. Drunk movement and aiming are penalties; sip, do not chug before a Louisville run.
Disinfection and Molotovs still love high-proof loot. Brewing does not replace every bourbon spawn, but it stops the county from running out of “liquid that burns” in month four.
Vinegar is the quiet prize. Build 41 vinegar was finite. Build 42 fermentation makes jars a renewable canning line if you also have salt, sugar, and jars from Farmer-side crafts. That is why The Indie Stone framed Brewer as preservation, not a party trick.
Brewer occupation versus grinding the skill
Brewer (verify cost on a test spawn after 42.20.x rebalance) front-loads Brewing skill and often station literacy so you are not staring at an unknown ferment recipe on day twenty. It is a weak week-one fighter—take a weapon trait or a co-op escort from Occupations. Combine with Farmer if your group wants hops and barley in the same yard.
Everyone else: loot brewing magazines, watch the crafting menu auto-learn thresholds, and build the barrel before you plant a 240-day hops field “for later.”
Stations: barrels, not kitchen spam
You need a fermenting barrel (crafted or looted in rural sheds, bars, and farm outbuildings). Place it where rain and zombies will not chew the tile. This is base furniture, like a composter or kiln.
Typical loop:
- Harvest or loot barley, wheat, rye, or fruit. Hops are a long crop—sow in the late-summer window from Agriculture (often August–October, ~240 days). Do not plant hops on 9 July and expect beer in August.
- Mill grain when the recipe asks for flour or malt. Stone querns and farm mills appear in the Build 42 crafting tree; check your menu rather than a B41 wiki table.
- Combine water, sugar or malt, and yeast-like ingredients the recipe names. Yeast can be looted; some paths use leftover mash. If the recipe is unknown, you are missing literature or skill, not “clicking wrong.”
- Wait. Fermentation is calendar time. Label the barrel. Do not dump a new mash on an unfinished batch because you are bored.
- Output beer, wine, or mash for further steps. Leave product exposed per the vinegar recipe if you are canning, not drinking.
Pottery crocks and jars are the storage end. Empty bourbon bottles from loot still matter as fluid containers under Build 42’s liquid system.
Alcohol as a survival item
Drink for mood, then sleep it off—Sleep and Rest. Do not drive. Do not fight sprinters. Vehicles plus drunk controls is a meme death.
Use looted liquor for wound cleaning when medical disinfectant is gone, knowing it is worse than proper antiseptic (Infection Mechanics). Craft Molotovs from glass bottles plus gasoline only when you have an exit—Campfires already taught you fire spreads.
Vinegar and the canning chain
- Finish a beer or wine batch you can spare.
- Follow the in-game vinegar ferment (open-air / secondary ferment—use the recipe text, not a blog that still says B41 item IDs).
- Jar vegetables with vinegar, salt, and sugar as Cooking and preservation recipes allow.
- Salt remains a loot bottleneck. Brewing does not spawn salt mines. Route loot through kitchens and warehouses.
Without vinegar, drying racks from Food Preservation still save meat. Brewing is how pickled surplus survives a powerless winter.
Farm layout next to the still
Put grain and hops inside the fence with chickens, not on the road to town. Farming and Animals already wants that perimeter. Compost rotten mash and spoiled fruit in the composter instead of leaving it in the kitchen to train flies and moodles.
Water: barrels drink a lot. Tie brewing to water collectors after shutoff or you will choose between beer and baths. Wash Clothes will lose that argument.
Multiplayer
One Brewer, one Farmer, one Carpenter. The Brewer should not also be the only person who can hotwire. Death during a three-month hops wait is a season joke nobody wants.
Early Access caveats
Biofuel fantasies and “distill gasoline from potatoes” loops are mod or outdated guide territory unless your crafting menu shows them. Vanilla 42.20 brewing is alcohol, vinegar, and homestead time. Verify after 42.20.4.
Plant grain. Build the barrel. Wait. Jar what you do not drink. That is the perk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How do I brew beer in Project Zomboid Build 42?
Build or find a fermenting barrel, gather grain or hops on Agriculture’s calendar, learn the ferment recipe via skill, magazine, or Brewer occupation, then wait the batch out. Hover grey recipes—do not use Build 41 kitchen steps.
Can I make vinegar in Build 42?
Yes. Ferment alcohol and follow the vinegar recipe so jars become renewable. Salt and jars are still loot. See Food Preservation.
Is Brewer a good occupation?
For month-long homesteads and co-op preservation, yes. For day-one combat, no. Pair it with a weapon trait or a fighter partner from Occupations.
How long do hops take?
Hops are a long industrial crop—on the order of 240 days with a late-year sow window. Plant them as a season project, not a first-week task. Agriculture has the month table.
Does brewing make biofuel?
Do not plan a vanilla run around biofuel unless the current crafting menu lists it. 42.20 brewing is drinks and vinegar. Mods are optional and fragile after 42.20.4.
