Project Zomboid Echo Creek and March Ridge

Western farm town versus gated military suburb—loot, spawns, and why annotated maps change the trip.

Echo Creek and March Ridge

Build 42.20’s western expansion is not only Brandenburg, Ekron, and Irvington. Two older names still generate search traffic because they play nothing like Muldraugh: Echo Creek (tiny farm town on Kentucky 60) and March Ridge (gated residential pocket south of Muldraugh with a military-flavoured apartment block). This page is the expedition brief. Town blurbs for the whole county stay on Knox County Towns. Spawn math stays on Starting Locations. Stash-map mechanics that apply everywhere stay on Annotated Maps.

Echo Creek: small town, farm physics

Echo Creek sits east of Ekron, north of Irvington, on Kentucky 60, with a creek into Wadsworth Lake. Official flavour text calls it humble farm-and-church Kentucky. In practice it is an easy-medium start that lies about difficulty: zombie counts look low until migration from neighbouring high-pop cells refills Main Street after you clear it.

Loot personality: balanced household spawns, weak melee guarantee. If houses roll no axe and no crowbar, you are under-gunned for a “quiet” town. Drive for hardware; do not wait for the diner to grow a fire axe.

POIs worth a marked map:

  • Gas-2-Go + diner + second-floor apartment (~3573×10899) — the default base pitch: fuel, food service, a flat upstairs, auto shop attached. Custom sandbox can spawn you here (Echo Creek spawn was removed in 42.16 and returned in 42.17 for Custom Sandbox only).
  • Festival west of Main Street — community notes call out a guaranteed generator. Pair with Generators before shutoff.
  • Ovo Farms, Blair’s Potted Paradise, produce warehouses, wrecking yard — animal and vehicle loops for farming and towing.
  • Guns Unlimited (~2590×10910) — the western gun run that is not inside the tiny downtown. Plan fuel and a retreat. It is why Echo Creek players still die on a “quick gun trip.”
  • Church, water tower, Speedy GO, Caban wildlife center — secondary.

Play Echo Creek if you want animals, wells on nearby farms, and a short commercial strip. Leave Echo Creek when nails, saws, and a real melee weapon still missing after day three—schedule Brandenburg or Ekron hardware.

Basements exist in some trailers and houses after 42.20—clear them like Basements and POIs, not like empty crawlspaces.

March Ridge: apartments, school, no police station

March Ridge is a gated military-adjacent suburb south of Muldraugh, Dixie Highway on the east. Medium difficulty: harder than Rosewood, easier than a blind West Point rush if you respect vertical zombies. The business strip is compact: grocery, pharmacy, clinic, VHS, post, theatre, bar, large school campus, church. There is no police station, fire station, or in-town gun store in the March Ridge cells. Firearms come from stashes, apartments, or a drive elsewhere.

Knox Military Apartments on the north edge are the famous multi-floor block. Without an annotated map they are ordinary apartments—sparse rooms are not a “B42 empty bug.” With Map 9 read before first entry, the building can roll a large survivor-cache rewrite (guns, food, tools, extra zombies, barricades). Coordinates used in 42.19 guides sit near 10092×12619. Confirm on your 42.20.4 save; glow-up labels move. Noise outside pulls upper floors down the stairwell. Do not honk in the lot.

Play March Ridge if you have a stash map or you want a dense residential loot pocket without Louisville. Skip March Ridge as a first-week home unless you like hallway fights and weak commercial melee.

Valley Station (south of Louisville) is a different detour: specialist buildings and the approach to military checkpoints. Do not conflate it with March Ridge.

Annotated maps are why veterans drive here

March Ridge has ten documented annotated-map outcomes (gun, shotgun, tools, survivor house, Map 9 apartments, Map 10 church medical floorboard). Some stashes only roll if the map came off a zombie. Map 9 can roll from containers and vehicles. Read the map before you load the target building. Details and Louisville’s sixteen maps live on Annotated Maps.

Echo Creek is not a March Ridge-scale stash town. Do not skip Guns Unlimited because you are waiting for a magic map that does not exist.

A practical week

  1. Echo Creek diner spawn or relocate: generator from the festival, vehicle, well on a neighbouring farm.
  2. One Guns Unlimited run with an exit; do not base in the gun shop lot.
  3. Hardware from Brandenburg or Ekron.
  4. March Ridge only with a map in the inventory or a deliberate apartment clear after week two.
  5. Louisville still optional—western farms do not need the skyline in month one.

Multiplayer

Echo Creek’s diner is a named spawn. Expect company. March Ridge apartments are a grief magnet if someone already entered Map 9’s building. Call the stash in voice before you drive.

Early Access mapping note

42.20 reworked many towns; March Ridge was not always in the “named glow-up three.” Interiors and POI indexes still move. Walk the block. Official support work through late 2026 includes mapping tools—pins in old YouTube videos are hints.

Two towns, two jobs: Echo Creek grows food and animals; March Ridge spends annotated paper. Treat them as destinations, not default homes.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can I spawn in Echo Creek on Build 42.20?

Custom Sandbox can. The Echo Creek spawn was removed in 42.16 and restored in 42.17 for Custom Sandbox only. Default random spawns may still skip it—check the spawn screen.

Is Echo Creek easy?

Low looking density, weak melee loot, and migration from nearby cells. The diner-gas complex is a strong base. Guns Unlimited is a separate, louder trip.

Why is the Knox Military Apartments empty?

Without Map 9 read first, it is normal apartment loot. Empty-feeling rooms are often rarity settings or a stash you already consumed. See Annotated Maps.

Does March Ridge have a gun store?

Not in the town cells. Use stashes, apartments, or drive. Echo Creek’s Guns Unlimited is the western alternative.

Should beginners live in March Ridge?

Usually no. Hallways and the apartment block punish mistakes. Echo Creek or starting locations like Rosewood are kinder first weeks.
