Project Zomboid Gun Store Entry in Build 42
Torch the bars, Destroy a wall, or walk through glass—stop punching shutters with a crowbar.
Build 41 taught a generation to hunt a sledgehammer for every barred gun cage. Build 42 still lets you Destroy a wall. It also lets you Scrap metal-bar tiles with a fueled welding torch and a welding mask—the same pair you already want for Welding and propane. Players search “how to get into a gun store Project Zomboid” because the crowbar does nothing, the door has no key, and a Molotov is how you cook the ammo. This page is the 42.20.4 entry order. Calibers and panic-sway stay on Firearms. Town pins stay on the interactive map and Louisville.
Clear the lot first
Torch work and Destroy are standing jobs. A crawler under the bumper during the animation is a bite with a bag full of 9mm. Walk the parking lot. Close the street if you can. In co-op, one player watches corners while the other holds the torch. Do not start this during the helicopter pass.
Bring a vehicle you can hotwire or already have keys for. The extract is louder than the entry. Park facing out.
Method 1: Scrap metal bars (torch + mask)
- Wear a welding mask (or goggles that count as the mask tag in your client).
- Equip a Welding Torch / BlowTorch with at least one fuel unit. Empty tanks are scrap. Propane is the refill story.
- Right-click the barred tile or gun-cage frame.
- Choose Scrap only if it appears.
You do not need welding rods for this scrap. Rods are for building metal. If Scrap never appears, you have the wrong tile: a generic metal swinging door, a rolling shutter that is not a bar frame, or a wooden wall painted like a cage. Stop. Switch methods. Do not stand there holding LMB.
When it works, you get a hole and often bar / steel scrap. That is loot, not a reason to linger. Guns and ammo are inside. Grab ammo first, then a gun you already understand, then leave. A gun store is not a second safehouse.
Method 2: Destroy a wall (sledge and friends)
If the cage will not Scrap, walk to a side or rear wall and use Destroy with a working sledgehammer. Community notes also list stone maul, club hammer, and pickaxe on some wall tiles—confirm the red highlight in your client. Destroy is loud. It deletes the tile. It does not need a mask.
Do not Destroy the floor you are standing on. Do not open a load-bearing wall into a horde you have not seen. A crowbar’s 8 door damage is not this job.
Method 3: Ordinary glass (the Rosewood lesson)
Some storefronts are wood and glass, not a welded vault. Smash a window, climb, loot, sheet-rope out if you already read Sheet Ropes. Rosewood’s gun shop front is the classic example people still quote. Scout the building. If you can see a normal window, you do not owe the county a torch.
Method 4: Fire (last resort)
Molotovs and campfire cheese can burn a hole. They can also cook the loot, cook you, and pull every zombie on the block. Use fire only after you have accepted that the guns might not survive. Keep an extinguisher if you are that kind of optimistic.
What “secured” doors actually are
Storage-unit metal and some “secure” doors are high HP melee sponges, not torch recipes. Axes and time work. Torches often do not. If Scrap is missing and Destroy will not paint, you are beating a door, not a cage. Budget endurance and a backup melee from Weapons.
Vanilla has no lockpick and no crowbar pry on these POIs. Workshop mods that add pry belong in the host’s mod list after 42.20.4’s loadstring removal—not in your expectations.
After you are in
- Noise already happened. Do not start a firing range in the aisle.
- Match ammo to guns; mixed calibers are encumbrance tax.
- A shotgun indoor is a last resort. The street outside is now interested.
- Leave through the hole you made. Do not discover the back room is a dead end with a bag of rifles.
Louisville gun shops stack this problem with density. Treat them as Louisville expeditions, not a day-three errand from Riverside.
Common mistakes
- Punching bars with a crowbar.
- Waiting a week for a sledge when a torch was in the welding aisle.
- Torching without a mask and wondering why the menu is empty.
- Molotov as plan A.
- Looting guns before ammo, then sprinting overweight into the lot.
Torch and mask for bars, sledge for walls, glass when the POI is honest, fire when you are willing to lose the prize. That is gun-store entry in 42.20.4.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Do I need a sledgehammer to enter a gun store in Build 42?
Not always. Many metal-bar cages Scrap with a fueled welding torch and mask. Use a sledge Destroy on a wall when Scrap never appears. Details on Sledgehammer and Propane.
Why is there no Scrap option on the shutter?
Wrong tile. Rolling shutters and generic metal doors often refuse. Walk a side wall for Destroy, or smash ordinary glass if the front is a normal window.
Do I need welding rods to cut gun-store bars?
No. Rods are for building metal. Scrap on bars wants torch fuel and a welding mask.
Can I crowbar or lockpick the cage?
Should I burn the store open?
Only as a last resort. Fire can destroy the loot and pull a horde. Prefer torch or Destroy. Molotov is the risk chapter.
