Project Zomboid Molotov Cocktails in Build 42

Fuel, cloth, a lighter in the other hand—and why fire is a worse roommate than zombies.

Molotov Cocktails

A Molotov is not a grenade. It is a bottle of fire you throw so a tile catches and keeps burning. Players search “how to make Molotov Project Zomboid” because Build 42’s crafting UI hid a recipe that used to live in a right-click myth, and because Fire Bomb (magazine, timer, sensors) is a different item. This page is vanilla Make Molotov Cocktail on 42.20.4: inputs, how to throw, and why most survivors should barricade instead. Pair it with Campfires so you understand ignition, Fuel and Siphon for petrol, and Corpse Disposal if you are thinking of a burn pile rather than a war crime against your own roof.

Early Access still tweaks throwables. Confirm the crafting panel in your client. Some older Steam threads claimed the recipe was commented out; current PZwiki and 42.13+ item data still list Make Molotov Cocktail. If your sandbox or a challenge removes fire, the craft will not save you.

Recipe (vanilla)

You need one fluid source and one cloth:

  • Fluids (about 1000 mL of one): gasoline / petrol, vodka, whiskey, tequila, or rubbing alcohol.
  • Cloth: a rag (clean or dirty) or denim strips (clean or dirty).

No hammer. No skill gate on the basic craft. No workstation. Open the crafting menu, find Molotov, combine. Using petrol instead of bourbon is how you keep the drinking bottle for Cooking and morale.

Fire Bombs are a separate magazine-gated explosive family (timers, sensors). Do not confuse them with a rag-in-a-bottle. If the only recipe you see is Fire Bomb, you are in the traps / explosives tab, not Molotov.

How to throw it

The item is a thrown weapon. It does not deal impact HP. It starts fire in a radius (FireRange 4 in current item data). You must hold a lighter in the other hand (OtherHandRequire). Matches are not a substitute in the item script—loot a lighter.

  1. Equip the Molotov as the primary weapon.
  2. Equip a lighter in the secondary / off-hand.
  3. Use the throw / swing throw animation. After the throw, another Molotov in inventory may auto-equip if you have one.

Deaf characters still see fire. They do not hear the bottle break. Plan visually.

Why most runs should not spam them

  • Fire spreads. Wooden houses, your sheet rope, your crate of nails, your only tent—all of it burns. Knox County wind and multi-tile buildings punish “just one bottle on the porch.”
  • You can ignite yourself. Throw range is modest. A panic toss at your own feet is a death screen with extra animation.
  • Hordes walk through fire badly, then your loot is ash. Zombies that burn still path. The building you wanted to loot tomorrow is a chimney.
  • Noise and light pull more walkers than a shove. Treat it like a gun: a planned tool, not a fidget.

Use a Molotov on open ground, a field pull, or a zombie cluster you will not enter. Never as indoor pest control. Never on helicopter day. Never next to a generator and petrol cans.

Loot versus craft

Crafted Molotovs are the reliable path. World spawns exist at low odds (forage tables include a tiny chance). Do not farm forage for bottles of fire. Siphon petrol, rip a shirt, loot a lighter from a kitchen or zombie, craft two, leave the rest of the petrol for the car.

Co-op rules

Call the throw. Friendly fire is the building. Hosts can ban Molotovs in the starter house the same way they ban sledge tests on the stairwell. Servers and Co-op.

Common mistakes

  • Crafting a Fire Bomb recipe and calling it a Molotov.
  • Throwing without a lighter equipped.
  • Using the last petrol on cocktails instead of the siphon loop.
  • Clearing a house from the inside with fire.
  • Storing Molotovs next to the wood stove.

If you need area denial, consider noise, fences, and patience first. If you still want fire, throw it where you do not plan to sleep.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How do you craft a Molotov in Build 42?

Combine ~1000 mL of petrol, vodka, whiskey, tequila, or rubbing alcohol with a rag or denim strips in the crafting menu. Confirm the recipe on 42.20.4 if a challenge disables fire.

Why can’t I throw the Molotov?

Equip a lighter in the off-hand. The weapon script requires it. Then use the throw animation, not a melee swing into a wall.

Is a Molotov the same as a Fire Bomb?

No. Fire Bombs are a magazine and trap family with timers and sensors. A Molotov is a rag and a bottle of fuel.

Should beginners use Molotovs?

Usually no. Fire spreads into your loot and your roof. Learn combat and barricades first.

Does a Molotov kill zombies on impact?

No direct damage. It starts fire. Burning tiles and time do the work—and they do not care whether the building was yours.
