Occupations in Project Zomboid
Profession kits and skill bonuses for Build 42 Early Access character creation.
Occupations in Project Zomboid are more than flavor-they define starting equipment, skill levels, and sometimes recipe access. Build 42 Early Access adjusted several kits as crafting expanded. Choosing a profession before spending trait points prevents redundant positives (paying for Organized when your job already includes a large bag) and highlights gaps (no weapon on Unemployed means trait budget goes to combat or flight).
This guide ranks occupations for learning survival, explains co-op role splits, and points to Beginner Builds for complete examples. Pair with Traits Tier List when customizing.
Tier overview for new players
S tier (learning friendly): Fire Officer, Park Ranger, Security Guard - weapon or tool plus relevant combat or foraging skills.
A tier (strong with planning): Electrician, Carpenter, Mechanic, Nurse - excel after day three when bases, vehicles, or medical depth matter.
B tier (niche or harder starts): Burglar, Chef, Farmer, Rancher, Repairman - reward specific playstyles or need backup combat traits.
C tier (challenge or redundant): Unemployed, Burger Flipper - maximum flexibility but zero free gear; not recommended for first Early Access run unless you enjoy hard mode.
Tiers assume default sandbox. High population makes combat occupations more valuable; abundant loot and animal systems make crafting and rancher paths scale faster in Build 42.20.
Fire Officer
Starts with axe skill, protective gear, and a weapon suited to Combat Basics. Strongest generic recommendation for solo week one. Barricading and fire mechanics occasionally help with molotovs later.
Co-op: default frontliner. Pair with Electrician for generator wiring after Water and Power Shutoff.
Park Ranger
Backpack, trapping knowledge, and foraging alignment. Excellent for maps with forest borders and outskirts houses. Weaker direct combat than Fire Officer-doorway discipline required.
Co-op: scout and hunter role. Mark wells and remote loot for the group.
Security Guard
Short blunt skill and bat. Simple, durable opening clears. Less utility than Fire Officer axe (no tree chopping) but stable knockdown.
Co-op: indoor clearer and stairwell holder during events like the Helicopter Event.
Electrician
Electrical skill accelerates generator connection and wiring in Build 42 bases. Often starts with fewer combat tools-take Stout or weapon traits. Becomes S tier once your group owns a generator and gas stockpile.
Co-op: essential utility role in long campaigns. Not duplicate if another player already covers combat.
Carpenter
Construction skill speeds barricades, rain collectors, and carpentry projects. Starts softer in combat; prioritize safe house upstairs meta from Getting Started.
Co-op: base architect while fighters loot nails and planks.
Mechanic
Vehicle maintenance and repair knowledge. Weak day-one zombie fight, strong day ten+ mobility. Find a weapon immediately on spawn.
Co-op: designated driver and vehicle recovery after First Week Survival scouting day.
Nurse / Doctor
Medical skill reduces bandage waste and improves treatment outcomes. Doctor costs more occupation points but starts higher. Combat gear varies-check current Build 42 kit after patches.
Co-op: group medic. Keep shared medical crate at main base.
Burglar
Sneaking and nimble perks with lighter kit. High skill ceiling, lower forgiveness. Experienced players only for first character unless low population.
Chef / Farmer
Food mood and farming paths. Chef helps preserved food variety and pairs with Food Preservation; Farmer accelerates crops from the first-week guide. Both need fighter partners early.
Rancher
Build 42’s animal-care specialist. Strong when your group commits to pens, feed, and milk/egg loops from farming and animals. Weak as a pure day-one fighter-take a weapon trait or co-op escort. Excellent mid-campaign pick for rural Ekron-style bases and Hunting and Tracking support roles that process livestock safely.
Engineer / Metalworker / blacksmith-leaning jobs
Late-game crafting power for forges and fabrication covered in Blacksmithing and Crafting. Poor week-one stats unless heavily traited. Multi-month characters and co-op workshop roles benefit most.
Unemployed
Maximum trait points, zero kit. Veterans craft bespoke builds; beginners should prefer a weapon occupation and spend saved points on Organized or Stout instead of replicating a job kit with traits alone.
Occupation point cost versus trait budget
Expensive occupations (Doctor, Engineer) refund fewer trait points. Cheap occupations (Fire Officer, Security Guard) leave less trait budget but include gear worth hundreds of in-game loot minutes. Calculate: if an occupation saves three house clears for a bat and bag, it is worth the point cost on learning runs.
Build 42 changes to watch
Build 42 integrated crafting overhauls-Mechanic, Tailor, and Electrician interactions receive more frequent tweaks than combat occupations. After each major patch:
- Confirm starting inventory in a test spawn
- Re-read recipe unlock tooltips tied to professions
- Check community patch notes for kit nerfs
Early Access means “Electrician starts with X” can change; mechanics described here stay directionally true.
Co-op composition examples
Balanced trio: Fire Officer + Nurse + Electrician - fight, heal, power.
Loot rush quartet: Security Guard, Park Ranger, Mechanic, Carpenter - clear, scout, drive, build.
Avoid: Four Fire Officers with identical traits-redundant axes, no generator skill, shared weaknesses to mood traits.
Linking occupations to guides
Combat professions follow Combat Basics immediately. Utility professions should still clear their spawn street day one-delegating all fighting to co-op partners while you stand unarmed gets everyone killed when separation happens.
Water planning from Water and Power Shutoff is occupation-agnostic: every profession fills tubs day one.
Occupations set your first hour, not your whole apocalypse. Pick kit that covers weapon, bag, and one long-term skill you enjoy using-then let traits from Traits Tier List fill the rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What is the best occupation for beginners in Build 42?
Fire Officer, Park Ranger, and Security Guard offer weapons or tools plus useful skills. Full point layouts are in Beginner Builds.

Electrician is ideal. Place them on wiring duty after looting fuel while fighters secure the area-see Water and Power Shutoff.
Did Build 42 change starting occupation gear?
Some kits and crafting ties were adjusted. Always verify inventory on a test spawn after major Early Access patches.
Can two players pick the same occupation?
Yes, but co-op groups progress faster with diverse kits covering combat, medical, and utility roles.
