Project Zomboid Louisville Border Checkpoints

Sledge or torch from the south, open gates from the city side, and why Dixie Camp is a siege not a loot pin.

Military Checkpoints

The Exclusion Zone border is the fence between Louisville and the rest of Knox County. Players search “military checkpoint loot,” “how to get into Louisville,” and “sledgehammer fence” because the southern gates do not behave like a door. On Build 42.20.4, two small checkpoints are walled on the Valley Station side and gated on the Louisville side. The big Dixie Highway camp is a horde building. This page is the route and expectation guide. City districts stay on Louisville. The tool that opens fences stays on Sledgehammer Locations. Welding stays on Welding.

Loot inside tents is randomized. Sandbox rarity applies. Do not leave home because a wiki promised a named rifle.

The two small southern checkpoints

Community 42.20 checks (August 2026) place:

  • Louisville Road checkpoint near 13425×4073 (Farnly / South Park area).
  • Ernest Cooper Road checkpoint near 14525×4017.

They are not two names for Dixie Camp. From Valley Station, a documented approach toward Ernest Cooper runs Dixie Highway → Appletree Lane → Bearcamp Road → Washington Road → Ernest Cooper Road. Louisville Road is a separate northbound fence. Use the current interactive layer—see Interactive Map—because B41 “turn left before the bend” videos lie after tile moves.

From the south (Valley Station): the fence is closed. You need Destroy with a sledge or a welding torch (and skill/fuel) to cut in. Empty-handed approaches are walls.

From the Louisville side: an openable gate. That is why veterans treat the first break-in as expensive and every later trip as a clean exit. Once you live in the city, these checkpoints become the way out and back in without another sledge swing.

Each small post is a three-tent kit in PZwiki terms:

  • Barracks — military clothing, knives, holsters, occasional firearms and ammo.
  • Firearms tent — the one you actually came for; still a roll, not a vault.
  • Communications — radios, electronics, ammo, occasional guns. Pair with Radio and AEBS.

Clear tents like rooms: corners, under cots, chests at bed feet. Noise pulls the fence line. Do not dump magazines in the open lot.

Dixie Highway / main army checkpoint

The principal southern road into Louisville is a large refugee/military camp with a pedestrian-scale mess, towers, and zombie counts the community describes in the thousands on busy settings. It is the “I brought a shotgun and a dream” graveyard. Loot ceiling is real. Recovery if you die inside is a second expedition.

Treat Dixie Camp as a late-game raid with a vehicle facing out, meds from Medical, and a friend on Stealth if you insist on going loud. Beginners should use a small checkpoint or wait.

Ashville Road / eastern fence (Build 42)

Build 42 opened more play on the eastern border near the airport-adjacent military post. Older B41 “indestructible map-edge fence” assumptions fail. Community guides describe walking the fence into a larger installation (barracks, supply, comms, tower, converted warehouses). The catch is distance. You reach it after a long drive from wherever you can park. Verify the live tile; this wiki will not invent a hole that a hotfix closed.

What to bring

  • Sledge or welding kit—see tools and Welding
  • Vehicle with fuel from Fuel and Siphon
  • Bag space for ammo cans
  • Sheet rope or a second-story plan if the camp has towers—Sheet Ropes
  • A written rally point south of the fence so a death is not a walk through the same gate

Hotwire a junk car on the Louisville side if your entry vehicle dies in the tent row—Hotwire.

Multiplayer

Call which checkpoint is “ours.” Two groups cutting Louisville Road and Ernest Cooper at once will migrate zombies along the fence. Hosts sometimes raise population on the border; ask.

Early Access

Border sprites, gate flags, and which fence segments destroy still take support patches. After 42.20.x, test destroy on a throwaway save before you walk a hardcore character to 13425×4073 with one sledge and no torch. Official 2026 mapping-tool updates can move a gate a tile. Walk it.

The border is a door you build. Build it once from the south, then use the city-side gate like a civilized survivor.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How do I enter Louisville from the south without Dixie Camp?

Louisville Road (~13425×4073) or Ernest Cooper Road (~14525×4017). Bring a sledge or welding torch; the Valley Station side is fenced. Gates open from inside the city.

Is checkpoint loot guaranteed military rifles?

No. Tents roll clothing, ammo, radios, and occasional firearms under your loot rarity. Plan a trip, do not bet the run on one chest.

Should I raid the main Dixie Highway camp first?

Usually no. Zombie counts can be extreme. Use a small checkpoint or a late-game raid with an exit vehicle. See Louisville for district risk.

Can I get in without a sledgehammer?

Welding can cut some fences. Some eastern Build 42 fence segments are walkable. Confirm on your 42.20.4 save. Empty hands at the two small southern posts fail.

Where do I find a sledge for the fence?

Warehouses, work vans, or the forge path—Sledgehammer Locations. Do not spend the only sledge on a decorative wall at home first.
